OT: RIP Peter Tork | The Boneyard

OT: RIP Peter Tork

The Monkees were disrespected and worked very hard to overcome the criticism of those "purists" who denigrated them. But look at their body of work, and how many truly iconic songs they produced. Daydream Believer is one of my favorites. RIP, Peter. And thanks.

Yea, they had some good songs, however, they didn't actually write any of them.

That is true, but that is true of many performers. So writing them gives you "bonus" points. But I do not think that not writing them creates a deficit situation. Many of our most beloved songs were recorded by artists that did not write them. I am not claiming that they were among the greats of music, but I think that they deserve better than they sometimes get. :)

Are you trying to tell me ELVIS didn't write all the songs he sung? My balloon just popped. I'll never visit Memphis again.

I don't know where they fit in the land of music. But during their era they were omni-visible and heard often.

Or ubiqitous and omnipresent! When you become elevator music you know you have arrived. Yes, this is our Irish wake. We can laugh as we raise a pint.

Irish were the true believers . So a wake was Joy. Have joy Peter is so well remembered..ubiquitous maybe, but at a period of their entertainment life it seemed a clip or spot of them was seen as one surfed the tube. My daughters preferred the Cassidy kid. Do run run.

I loved the show when I was young, but the truth is the Monkees were never really a rock & roll band in the conventional sense. They were a collection of personalities with some musical ability that were put together by the network for a tv show.

After a successful 2 year run, the show and the group unraveled over money and the desire of several members to have more artistic control. Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were the two most active members of the group pushing for increased compensation and control.

Had the group been more amenable to working through their differences and staying together they could have had a very long and profitable run.

Now then, maybe we all can get together on this group:

Just don't say anything bad about Susan Dey or we'll have a problem. Got me!

The woman who played the mom is Shirley Jones. She is from Western Pennsylvania, in a river town south of Pittsburgh. Her family owned the Jones Brewing Company ,which produced beer dating back to the 19th century. The brand, Stoneys, was very popular in towns south and east of Pittsburgh. Shirley was a local princess! And I am sure Susan Dey was also very special. :D

I'll have a Stoney! Of course, the back stories on that cute American family are XXX rated.

Monkees were underrated, including by a lot of us who listened to them at the time. Their music, whoever wrote it, stands up well to the test of time, a lot better than many groups that were more respected back then.

The Monkees got a bad rap, some of it certainly undeserved. Outside of Peter Tork, they didn't play the instruments on their first couple of albums, leading to widespread belief that they couldn't play. That really wasn't the case, as at least the three Americans were professional musicians before they joined the Monkees (I am not saying Davy Jones wasn't, I just don't know). Tork was actually quite an accomplished instrumentalist, as I discovered when I saw him in the early 80's. I discovered recently on Wiki that they just didn't play on the first two albums because the producers thought the TV show was too demanding, and recording would take the actor's efforts away from it.

Although they had a songwriting team assigned to them, they did write some of their songs. And Mike Nesmith wrote Different Drum, which was a big hit for the Stone Poneys.

Nice history lesson about Western PA, Bama! Well done!

When it comes to playing instruments, read up on the Beach Boys. After a while, Brian Wilson was laying down the instrumental tracks with the famed wrecking crew while the band was touring. Then the Beach Boys themselves added the amazing vocals. So they didn't play the instruments on the albums either.

Good call, that may have been one reason the Monkees handlers did it that way. Pet Sounds was one of the albums with studio musicians. You can't argue that the formula didn't work on that one, at least from the artistic results.

I think The Monkees more than made up for their song writing deficit with their sons of mothers who invented liquid paper credit (not that typewriter correction fluid residuals are doing all that great anymore).
