OT: RIP Mel Stottlemyre.

My formative years in baseball were the 60's and 70's. Mel played for the Yankees during their rebuild from M and M to the 70's when the regained prominence. Pretty good hitter for a pitcher too.

.-.
Not a Yanks fan but I always liked Mel and Joe Pepitone as a kid
RIP Mel

Just a great pitcher and doing so on some terrible Yankee teams for the best part of his career.

.-.
I saw Mel pitch his first game at the stadium. Me and dad. Without Googling, hopefully I am correct or close, I remember him winning the game against the White Sox. 9-6 I believe or 9-3. Anyway, he also got a base hit, and Mickey Mantle hit the longest home run in Yankee Stadium. Over 500 feet dead center. Maris also chipped in with long ball. We sat third row between home plate and Yankee dugout. How my dad got those tickets is beyond me.

Back then, there were always plenty of seats available. If you could afford them, you got them. Old Yankee Stadium sat 67K, yet 1964 attendance (for a WS-bound team) was only ~1.3 million (16K/game). Last place Mets outdrew them by 400K.

Great info. I am exiled in Hershey. What a coincidence.
