Judgment at Nuremberg (great acting, as expected, by Spencer Tracy and Maxmillian Schell, but astonishing brief performances by Montgomery Clift and Judy Garland!)
Inherit the Wind (Tracy again, jousting with Frederic March -- the "Monkey Trial" re-enacted)
Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks at his best -- I loved the casting of Madeline Kahn as Lili von Stupf -- and, yes, I "got it." )

I bought a region free bluray player so that I could buy cheap imports from amazon UK.

I now spend several hours every week watching my favorites with my son.
He is slowly developing a taste for the classics.

Among my purchases from Amazon UK:

1. Harry Potter complete Bluray £ 16
2. Sherlock Holmes Jeremy Brett complete (Spanish edition) bluray. You can run it in English/Spanish.
3. All Creatures great and small DVD. Was selling at £ 21 last month.
4. Inspector Morse complete DVD
5. Campion complete DVD
6. Miss Marple complete DVD (Danish edition) £ 11 or 12
7. As Time goes by complete (in two parts)
8. Fawlty towers complete
9. Allo Allo
10. The complete doctor series (Doctor in the house etc)
11.The Forsyte saga (ITV version in color)
12. Woman in white

and so on.

On tap: Sharpe's rifles (the complete Sharpe collection), MASH (cheaper here), Keeping up appearances

I have not neglected Costco and Amazon USA

Over the years I have bought, Dickens, Jane Austen, Rumpole, I Claudius and a lot more.
On amazon, the used DVDs are often a big bargain.

I would strongly urge you to explore Oscar Wilde, Bernard Shaw, Prime Suspect and Ken Burns (PBS).

Now that I'm awake -- I must add The Sting to my list. A movie that has many unique and creative touches, Newman and Redford at their best, and the ultimate surprise ending.

Someone mentioned car chases (Bullett?). I suggest Ronin, a Frankenheimer film with incredible car chases in France. Possibly best ever.

Unless they are on HBO or another movie channel I refuse to watch. Something about Uma Thurman calling Vivica A. Fox a "jerkface" right before she throws a knife in her chest upsets me. I can't stand censorship and cutting down of scenes when I know what is said and happens. I'm difficult that way.

The worst IMHO was Slapshot when they replaced "dyke" with "lesbian". Using a 3 syllable word in a 1 syllable hole is very disconcerting.

Brett's Sherlock, Rumpole and Morse are all favorites of mine. Have you seen Foyle's War? I think it may be the best of them all.
