Full statement & update from Gary Pinkel & AD Mack Rhoades here:
http://footballscoop.com/news/gary-...ision-to-strike-against-university-president/

>>Pinkel and AD Mack Rhoads have released a statement saying the team doesn’t intend to practice until graduate student Jonathan Butler ends his hunger strike against university leadership.

Today, Sunday, there will be no football practice or formal team activities. Our focus right now is on the health of Jonathan Butler, the concerns of our student-athletes and working with our community to address this serious issue. After meeting with the team this morning, it is clear they do not plan to return to practice until Jonathan resumes eating. We are continuing to have department, campus, and student meetings as we work through this issue and will provide further comment tomorrow afternoon.<<

Haven't seen much from the other sports teams on campus.

He did nothing in response to what though?
I get they are upset about some historical facts that paint the university in a bad light. I get they want to see more faculty of color, I'm a little lost on the catalyst of the whole thing. Did protesters crash a parade and cops get rough?

Remember, this is a campus under 2 hours away from Ferguson. Racial tensions are very high and I'm sure minorities deal with a ton of adversity day in and day out.

Just watched this video. Lots of anger. Justified or unjustified...anger. I find it sad.

Have swastika's drawn on your bathroom floor made from human feces and get called the "n" word while walking around campus by a bunch of kids in a pickup and I can see where the anger comes from.

I have four kids between the age of 28 and 35. They have still not grown up completely.
While I admire the desire for justice and the idealism of the young, I am sick and tired of protestors and whiners who have experienced nothing but indulgence from our society.
STFU! Get out there and do something! I've spent a fortune on others. I have no demands. Put your own time and money into a solution.

I'd want something done too. The entire situation is sad.

Only a matter of time before this goes Cesspool but, were the kids in that video actually protesting society in the late 1800's and Jim Crow laws? Again, what exactly are the football players protesting? And why is Pinkel supporting them calling for his boss' job? Whole thing sounds bizarre and lame. I hope they forfeit.

They took your advice and went out and protested..... this comment makes no sense.

They were drawing parallels to the past with their current situation. It wasn't that hard to understand the point they were making.

What current situation? Getting called the "n" word from a pickup truck by a bunch of idiot rednecks?

That type of thing takes a lot of courage to pull off. Thanks to @huskymedic for his links and bringing me up to speed. I was seeing snipets of this on twitter and was lost on why FB players were taking a stand against their school president.

It is a little hard to follow along. I get the historical context stuff. Demanding more faculty of color? I guess they can show where faculty of color have been passed over for similarly qualified whites. To us who are far removed from the situation, read their demands list, it is still difficult to comprehend what will satisfy them short of firing the school president.

The multiple "n" word instances and a swastika drawn with feces on a bathroom floor all within the first 3 months of the year.

I bet if you were surrounded by people of a different race than you in a part of the country that had multiple historical instances of oppression towards your racial demographic, them shouting slurs at you would be terrifying and unsettling.

Was it not investigated? If the culprits were found were they not expelled? How was the President deficient?

I'll be honest and say this is where I typically disagree with these protests. They bring issues to light which are important but they don't really bring solutions. It's tough because there is no way to reasonably expunge racism besides a culture change. My feeling is that they want a president who will at least acknowledge the past that Missouri has had and make steps to change the culture of the campus. What those steps might be are beyond my pay-grade but as a University President you have a duty to acknowledge the issues that all students deal with day in and day out. If racism is one of those things, you must do something to change the culture.

I understand that. Why should the president lose his job? Did he endorse or ignore the behavior? That's where I'm lost. And their list of demands is kinda stupid.

He ignored it.

Bottom line, students should feel safe and things like swastikas are veiled threats. Maybe the president isn't responsible for every act of speech or violence on campus, but they should be responsible for a safe atmosphere. By not saying or doing anything for weeks, the president allowed the tension to escalate. Lack of leadership.

You obviously have a computer. I'm sure it's equipped with Google. What is possibly preventing you from answering the question you keep repeating? Deadspin did a pretty exhaustive overview of the situation yesterday. Shouldn't be hard to find.

Separately, old white people complaining about young people of color taking a stand against racism will never cease to be entertaining.
