"Caring daughter, devoted wife
I am thankful for the manner that my daughter, Alicia Bowman, cared for her husband, Steven Bowman this past year. He was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in November, 2007 and needed to undergo emergency brain surgery followed by aggressive radiation and chemotherapy treatment.
At 27 years old and married for just one year, she truly exemplified the "care" in the role of caregiver. Without delay, she began to live by her promise that "I must give Steven my best effort or I will never be able to live with myself." She requested a medical leave from her position as a teacher in Farmington and dedicated all her efforts to helping him "fight cancer." She relied on her religious beliefs and practices as the foundation for her strength; with daily mass, praying the rosary and guidance from her parish priests, especially Father Robert Riccardi.
A sterile home environment needed to be maintained, healthy and wholesome foods prepared along with a rigorous management of his medical care. She was grace under fire as the position as advocate became more critical and demanding. After the surgery, his medical protocols included doctors' appointments, hospital visits and stays, radiation, chemotherapy and concentrated medicinal treatments. As she focused on this vigorous and demanding schedule, she was balancing Steven's responses to the aggressive regime of treatments.
Regardless of the sacrifices that she made for his cure, she questioned why he had to suffer so much. She was strong even when she had no strength left. Family and friends supported this young couple when the burdens were too great to bear alone.
Along with assistance from family and friends, Alicia helped to organize and participate in several events in Steven's honor: a blood drive in February, a Relay for Life team titled the "Power of Prayer "in June, and a golf tournament at the Farms Country Club in September. She wrote hundreds of thank-you notes to family and friends for their many gifts of food, flowers, and prayers; so this Thanksgiving, I wanted to write my thank-you note to Alicia to tell her that I am thankful for all that she has done and continues to do for Steven."
