He always seemed like a very classy guy. I do remember the Open he won in DC in 1964...36 holes
on the last day in 100 degree heat. The doctor told him not to play but he obviously did.

BTW: a vague connection to the recent Tiger/Sergio kerfluffle.
I think I have this essentially correct. Ken was playing with Arnie at the Masters...both in contention. Arnie hit his tee shot on the par 3 twelfth hole over the green....in a bad lie.
He asked an official if he could get relief...not sure of the particular reason he gave. The rules
guy said 'no'. Arnie played from that lie....took double bogey. He then played a provisional from the new lie he felt he should have gotten...made par.

When the round was over he went to the committee and they overruled the official at the site....Palmer made the 3. Venturi went on record then and in the future that if it had been anyone but Arnie, the on-site ruling would have held...wasn't happy about it in the least.

Hey...US Open in about a month at historic Merion in Philly...at least one Boneyarder will be on the premises with golfing-related wisdom in his posts on the board!

I love Ken Venturi. A classy gentleman, a figure of what golf is all about. An ambassador to the game. Golf should be very proud of what Ken Venturi brought to the game. God Bless Ken.

I'll be at the Friday round at Merion - then, back to MA for ASA girl's softball!

We lost Ken Venturi and Pat Summerall in a short period of time. They were a good team.

I have an extra U.S. Open ticket for Merion for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Available at face value to any Boneyarder. Merion is a unique and historic venue.

Classy guy who overcame a terrible speech impediment. And he had quite an amazing circle of 'friends'. God bless.
