Don't take intro to film in von der mehden. You'll rarely get there for friday 8am film lab and when you do you'll fall asleep.

It seems like an easy A but its not.

Lowest grade I got at UConn. C- and I was lucky.

I agree. Spring weekend here now is consisting of cops on every single street corner on campus. Dozens of cops on bicycles and some cops on horses. I ordered food last Spring Weekend and the driver apologized for being late after being stopped at 3 different police checkpoints along 195.

It's sad that a very small handful of people had to ruin it for tens of thousands of current and future students.

I actually think is the best for the University. The University did the best for its reputation, for the value of your degree, and for the quality of life of its current students. Don't get me wrong, I like to party up. But things were out of hands at Storrs... the school has only benefited from that smart move.

Not much of a benefit of the honors program. In fact I wouldn't even participate in it. It's extra work with the benefit you can put it on your resume.

Do the first two years -- smaller classes for some of the core stuff makes it easier. I didn't even bother getting the sophomore certificate -- I just took advantage of the program.

I did when I was in Storrs in the 1990's when only 10% of the student body went abroad and it was the best decision I made personally and professionally. I am still involved in the business school today and study abroad is a big push right now, then want to move it from 25% participation to close to 50% in the next few years.

Oh, and don't try to join the Century Club your 2nd night in campus. That cost me half of my liver and most of my GPA first semester.

I got out of the school of business in 2009 with a finance degree.

Few things:

1) You're in the school of business as a freshman - that's awesome - you have to maintain a decent gpa to stay into it until your jr year, if you fall out ( hard to do unless you really F up) it's near impossible to get back in.

2) What major are you thinking of doing? I did finance, but it seems like the school really specializes in accounting and has contacts with the big 4 and other companies. Accounting is a technical skill - if you can do accounting, you can do finance, but it's more learning to go the other way around.

3) Have fun bro, take advantage of it all. When you're a working class stiff you'll yearn to go back for a day - you have 4 full years ahead of you. just awesome.

Couldn't agree more. I did a year abroad (while in JC and 1 year before I got to UCONN) and it was absolutely life changing. Take advantage of it if you can. Doesn't matter where you go, just go.

Good:
Susan Nagel (Geology) Easiest geo prof. If you need a lab science this is by far the easiest way to go and she gives out rocks and stuff at the end of class.
Alain Frogley (Music) "Intro to Popular Music" or whatever the heck was literally easier than first grade.
Susan Herrick (EEB)
Eric Shcultz (EEB) Pretty hard but an excellent professor. I've never learned so much and gotten such a crappy grade in the same class before.

Bad, avoid at all costs:

Mark Urban (EEB) Complete who only accepts his own definitions word for word on exams as if he's the sole authority on ecology. Not only that but he sucks at teaching so you're never clear on what's what and whatever the book says is WRONG. Can't say enough terrible things about him.

Emilio Pagalotus?? (Econ) I doubt he teaches anymore but he was terrible. If you wanted to meet with him OR see your test grade, you would have to make an appointment trough his secretary. Lazy pos is probably retired by now.


The best way to pick gen eds that you don't care about is to look up the teachers on rate my professor and just take whoever is easy and doesn't require much work. No point (imo) writing 20 pages of bs when a class that requires almost zero work fulfills the same requirement.

As a second semester Sophomore in the business school, you'll likely take nearly all of the same Gen Ed courses your first two years.

Good:
Oskar Harmon (econ 1201) - The class itself isn't that easy but the way he has it set up makes it very easy to get an A.
Jamie Huff (WGSS 1124) - (Elective) - Women's studies class, very easy course and Ms. Huff is EXTREMELY easy to look at.
Dick Kochanek (Acct 2001) - Financial Accounting is not easy by any means. But Dick is easily the best (and most widely taken) professor to teach it to you.
George Bentley (Geog 1700) - Very nice guy and makes the class interesting. Easy to get an A in here if you show up.

Try to avoid:
Adam Fry (Bio 1102) - You have to take a 4 credit lab course as a UConn requirement. But whatever you do don't take Bio with Fry, he's an @ssh0le. Take Geoscience instead.


Granted, you're not going to be choosing your classes until you go to orientation in the summer so just try to keep this thread in the back of your mind.

ALSO: GO TO AN EARLY ORIENTATION. The sooner you go, the more likely that the classes that you want to take will have seats available. Many freshman have to take the same courses, especially in the business school. Try to sign up for a late spring, or early summer orientation if it fits your schedule. I did, and I was able to not have any Friday classes my first semester and still manage to take 17 credits

Best thing about UConn...the absolutely great people (well 80% or so) who choose to go to college there. When I look back, THAT is what made UConn memorable.

I'm from New York and just got accepted into the Business School and Honors program with a scholarship of $15,000 a year totaling $60,000 over 4 years! So I was wondering what the benefits of the Honors program are at UCONN and if you guys could give me some insight into what is great about UCONN?

I graduated from the business school in 2012 from the Real Estate program. The class sizes are surprisingly small for such a huge university, so you get quite a bit of one on one interaction with professors. Its all about the effort you put in. When the professors see that they are more willing to help. Also, get involved as much as possible in clubs and get into an internship. I can;t stress that enough. No internship and you will have a very hard time finding a job. I didn't do an internship and it took me over a year to find something in my field. I got lucky and found a real estate broker willing to help and train me. Having a degree from the UConn business school was an eye opener too, so that helped my case.

So far I've gotten into Pitt and UCONNs business schools and am waiting to here back from Michigan--Ann Arbor--, Villanova, Maryland, and Syracuse. However, getting into UCONN has pretty much cut the cuse from my list.

I would prob go to Michigan if you got in but would strongly consider having Uconn as a #2. I spent 2 years at Nova and while the academics were solid I thought the campus life was brutal. Plus the BC/GTown inferiority complex was laughable. Just IMO of course. As you said, getting into Uconn, Cuse is a non starter.

Yeah, I liked Michigan a lot, although my true allegiances will always be with UCONN, but after that it's kind of a toss up. Villanova and Maryland probably have the best academics but nova seemed kind of dead to me, I thought it was because I visited on their Business School day and it was packed but maybe there's more to that. I haven't visited Maryland or Pitt yet but Maryland is kind of scummy from what I've heard. I visited UCONN last year and saw them beat Cincinnati behind a great performance from Shabazz which was awesome! Only concern with UCONN is the lack of a college town. I also visited the Cuse because both my parents went there, I live an hour away, my uncle went there, both my grandparents live there, and I like to watch college basketball (went to the SU Duke game), but I determined that they are on the same level as UCONN academically and I hate Syracuse sports so I could never go there, plus I loved my UCONN visit!!

I agree about Cuse and Nova. They are good but not great private schools. Not worth the $.

To the OP: Congrats!

I went to none of those schools (although I did turn down Michigan twice; in your face Michigan!), so take this with a grain of salt, but in my view, Michigan is the ONLY one of those schools that I would even CONSIDER choosing over the UConn Honors Program. Especially if nobody else is giving you a full ride. As for the HP, I would definitely do the extra work to put that on your resume. Some employers won't care, but as the head of recruiting for my firm, I can tell you that many do. UConn is a great school but not everybody outside CT knows how great it is; what they do know is that if you are in the HP then you really stood out in high school and challenged yourself in college. Bottom line: unless Michigan gives you good money to go, I'd become a Husky.

UCONNgrats! I went there starting in '89 for the business school. I'm sure it's even better now than it was then - and even back then it was a name that opened doors to interviews. I was blindsided by the Finance (201?) requirement for my MIS major and by the time I woke up from my complacency it was too late and I ended up with a C. You're a more serious student than I was but anyway watch out for "the tough class".

I jokingly say that my time in Storrs was the 5 best years of my life. I was an Economics major and decided to also get a Psychology degree. I was there from 83 to 88. In addition to being a very good school, it is simply a fantastic place to spend your 4 years. In addition to checking out the men's and women's basketball, there are fraternities, intramurals, great events at Jorgensen Auditorium, Ted's and Huskies bars on campus, the Dairy Bar and lots of special events put on by the Student Union Board of Governors. AND... if you are a decent looking guy who is outgoing, there are literally thousands of young ladies to get to know. I cannot imagine having a better time anywhere else, it truly was that much fun for me.

I wish you well...and I also wish I could do it all over again.
