I'm from New York and just got accepted into the Business School and Honors program with a scholarship of $15,000 a year totaling $60,000 over 4 years! So I was wondering what the benefits of the Honors program are at UCONN and if you guys could give me some insight into what is great about UCONN?

Pros: Money, you get to graduate with honors
Cons: A little more work throughout, the honors dorms (at least when I went a few years ago) SUCKED!

You should do it though. You can always drop it if you don't like it and you can switch to a better dorm after your first year. The money is nice.

Congrats on getting in, as a current sophomore I can tell you that it was one of the best decisions I ever made coming here. Everyone on campus is so pleasant, not to mention the campus seems to change every year with new buildings sprouting up left and right. The honors program is great because you get class selection early and it looks great on a resume. Just get ready to live in buckley..

I've never understood why they punish the honors students when it comes to housing...

Not much of a benefit of the honors program. In fact I wouldn't even participate in it. It's extra work with the benefit you can put it on your resume. However, if you are planning to get very good grades, than being in the honors program won't be of much benefit because an employer already knows that you are smart from the GPA. Instead of spending extra time with honors classes and a thesis I would become very involved with on campus organizations and make a lot of friends. That will help you in life and your career more in many different ways. Maybe some people had good experiences with it, so I'm just one opinion. I had good experiences with the business school. No classes on Fridays is a VERY good thing :)

Don't take intro to film in von der mehden. You'll rarely get there for friday 8am film lab and when you do you'll fall asleep.

It seems like an easy A but its not.

Ha, I had music appreciation there... I like classical music, but I would be asleep by the fourth note in those comfy chairs every class. Don't really remember attending any of the Friday discussions.

But to the original poster, UConn was far and away the best four years of my life. I can't comment on the honors program as I was the prb the Anti-Christ to those peeps.

But seriously, I had amazing fun, both in terms of pure debauchery, and in wholesome ventures. The people there opened my mind to countless things that I needed to experience. I met incredible people who I still call true friends. I learned to love and value education; most importantly in things that I never thought I'd care about and as an educator today, still share with my students the things that I learned. For the most part I had excellent professors who related to their students and were passionate about their work. And as icing on the cake, I was there to watch UConn win their first championship and go on that incredible ride. I don't make it up to campus all that much anymore, but when I do I am flooded with memories that I'll hold onto for the rest of my life. You will love it and since I graduated 12 years ago, it has gotten so much better.

great for you man. my roommate was in the honors program. this was in the mid to late 90's.... If I remember correct he had to write an extra paper per class and then a mini major based thesis paper his last semester. It helped him get into the uconn Law the next year.

Congrats!!!!!! I was in your shoes a year ago, and it felt great to get in, considering UConn had been my number one choice since September of my junior year. I have minimal regrets about my time here so far. Most importantly, do not for the love of God or who/whatever you worship take PHYS1025, Intro to Astronomy. I took it thinking it was a good alternative to my traditional lab sciences, and I barely scraped by with a C. Test averages are in the 40s usually, and we had curves as high as 50 points last semester. The teacher is older than the universe itself, and it was he worst experience of UConn so far. (End of Rant). Besides that, get ready for long walks through blizzard like conditions (today), amazing basketball games, and big lectures with (mostly) great professors. No better place to be than UConn. Multiple times last semester, as I was just walking around campus, I'd pinch myself and be like "I go here. I'm actually here. This is better than a dream." The excitement still hasn't evaporated, and I don't think it ever will. Welcome to the UConn family!!!!!!

It still is for freshman honors students, but most freshman don't know that you can choose not to live in the honors dorms.

What is great about UConn? Are you seriously asking? I graduated from the School of Business Administration, as it was called back then, and I highly recommend you take the package you've been offered and go. Very highly respected business school.

Very sad thinking that not one current or future UConn student has experienced or ever will experience a decent Spring Weekend...

I agree. Spring weekend here now is consisting of cops on every single street corner on campus. Dozens of cops on bicycles and some cops on horses. I ordered food last Spring Weekend and the driver apologized for being late after being stopped at 3 different police checkpoints along 195.

It's sad that a very small handful of people had to ruin it for tens of thousands of current and future students.

Words of wisdom. I remember taking that because I thought it would be an easy A also. Well it was hard and I switched it to pass/fail so it wouldn't hurt my gpa. Rashad Anderson, Hilton and a couple other bball players were also in my class. That was my sophomore year. I graduated from the business school in 05 and it's a great program. I wasn't in the honors program but if you are smart enough to get in then do it. You are probably also smart enough to have the same amount of partying time as everyone else because it won't take you as long to study.

Yes I know this is the BB forum, but KO has us covered, its BD that needs help.

Different school but here's my daughter's take on Chapel Hill's honors program, she has to take 1 honors course a semester and she says its the best course by far compared with her others. The professors teaching and other kids taking it are off the charts.

She describes the quality of classes with this comment, if 15 questions are asked during the class 14 are outstanding and one is dumb.

I don't think that having Honors College on your diploma, resume, means that much, but at some point in college its nice to be really interested in a class and have fun, and she has found that.

I think in the honors program you get priority on your classes. Besides that, UCONN has a very good business school. Congratulations! Now you have to read up on Hugh Greer, Toby Kimball,Chris Smith and Donyell Marshall.
