Though Page and Plant did not credit him on Zeppelin II, Willie Dixon wrote the lyrics to "Whole Lotta Love" back in the early '60s. It was recorded by Muddy Waters as "You Need Love". Zeppelin got sued and settled out of court.

As great as their music was, those 2 guys ripped off a lot of old American blues artists along the way.

That's fine but they were a lot more talented than Mayer nonetheless.....rip off or not.....what has this world come to!!

No kidding! I always considered that song a total outlier in the tone and content of their lyrics, which were usually whiny (lyin' cheatin' hurtin' that's all you seem to do/hey hey what can I do, I got a woman and she won't be true/baby I'm gonna leave you/etc.). Then there's this one hit song that's essentially: you need a lesson - bend over, and I'm gonna give you every inch of my love ("shake for me girl, I'm gonna be your backdoor man").

Never researched where it originated. Probably should have.

I agree, Zeppelin stole so much from the old Blues artists, but gave it all a little different flavor and helped shape the foundation for hard rock. They were an essential band for providing that.

When Led Zeppelin stole blues songs they improved the music 10 fold. Here John Mayer does a remake of a Tom Petty classic and turns it into an annoying pile of crap.

And yet, most women in the world would disagree.

Fans of blues would disagree with the first bit.

as always, to each his own.

Everybody seems to mention 'Your Body is a Wonderland' and all that stuff when they bring up John Mayer, but gloss over stuff like 'Gravity' where he plays one of the great all-time guitar solos, or his trio stuff on later albums.

I don't really care how many starlets he smashed, dude is LEGIT as a musician. Plus, he's from Bridgeport...

John Mayer's music does absolutely nothing for me. Right on a par with Wham.

However, he has banged more top shelf hotties than all of us combined, so he's got that going for him, which is nice.

Are u kidding, his version is great. It's acoustic. How bad could it be.

I like his guitar work, I follow a ton of music.

Yes, he has a huge crank and can whale. 2 skills all of us wish we had

So you're the guy who was all over Tiger for hammering 13 women and yet you know how big Mayer's "crank" is?..........you're a bit scary!

I don't care about Tiger's extracurricular activities, but dude could stand to raise the talent level

Even now Mayer w/Katy Perry, TW w/Lindsey Vonn

Advantage -- Mayer by more than a little

As a guitarist myself, absolutely nothing Mayer does is remotely interesting to me. He is more or less a carbon copy of SRV (who of course is a amalgamation of many of blues guys before him) . That is impressive in a way and Mayer is quite good at what he does. But I'd rather listen to the guys who did it first. Even from a songwriting and musical progression standpoint JM is ripping SRV off. That being said, JM's female resume is second to none. Especially considering his amazing quotient.

He sounds more like Clapton than SVR to me.

Both Clapton and Beck call him an elite guitarist.

Regardless of our opinions dude is worth $40 large and tapping major hotties.

I still don't understand Tiger at all. He cheats with 13 odd women, but most were a bunch of skanks. If you're going down that path, and you have the means, you have to go top shelf. Is it really worth it otherwise? It seemed liek the most colossal waste to me.

I know John pretty well (he dated my wife's roommate when he lived in Atlanta and my good friend was his manager. I have been saying for years that he is an on the guitar-he really kills it. My friend David Ryan Harris sung back up vocals for him on tour- he needed the help with the vocals- not so much playing the ax.

Nice story Scott. While I'm not a huge fan, you have to respect his talent. I remember seeing him at Eddie's Attic back in '99. Blew me away with the sounds coming from this kid (he may have been barely old enough to drink in the Attic).

The guy does a Clapton cover and it's "Lay Down Sally"? That's all I needed to hear. Pass. The only time I enjoyed him was on that Chapelle Show bit. And it wasn't even that funny.

I loved those shows at Eddies and Smith's Old Bar- they were a blast. He played Smiths one time with Angie O, Beth Wood, David Ryan Harris and G Love - good times.

I really need to check his show out next time he's in CT.

BTW...I'm headed to The Meadows (or whatever they call it these days) next Saturday for the Steve Winwood/Allman Brths show...a very nice double bill indeed.

My moms wants to hit the slots next Saturday and has dangled free REO Shitwagon/Styx tickets at us. We said 'yes' and maybe the Winwood could have us reneg on the ol' woman. I think Zack Brown is coming, too. Gotta go see them.

We saw him at the Meadows or whatever they call it these days(1) one or two summers ago and I can't remember one second of the show.
