1) There is a 2nd Gaetano's run by the same people on Elm St in Monroe. Agreed, it's great stuff.
2) Polonez in Shelton would be a good place to check out too, though it's obviously more Polish than German.

It's not as good as Filipek's on Elm St.
Here's a true story: My late Polish babcia (grandmother) lived on Willow St. in Meriden. When I was @ 10 yrs. old, I spent the weekend before Easter at her house to do errands for her. Back then, both Czapiga's & Filipek's were in different locations (around the corner from her house) My uncle & I went walking to both establishments for Easter kielbasa's as different family members had their favorites. I'll never forget the aromas as we arrived just as the smokers were being opened to extract the rings of deliciousness. We ordered an extra ring to taste test the final product. HEAVEN!

My german gf's mother shops here, it relocated from Yorkville (Upper East Side NYC) a few years back, its excellent, easy on and off I-95 Exit 24 Black Rock Turnpike

Yes, this is a good spot and it is fairly close. I know the prior owners of this market used to have a lot of German specialties like saurbraten, ham hocks, bratwurst and knockwurst. Many, many ethnic germans emigrated to the United States from Hungary, so my guess is even the new owners cater to the local german community in the area around Bridgeport. That being said, if you don't mind the drive, the SmokeHaus Deli in Hopewell Junction, NY. (about 20 min away from Danbury) is THE place to go. Used to go there for lunch during my years at IBM as did many other IBM'ers. Go to SmokeHausDeli.com, they even cater German style parties.

There are two SmokeHaus Delis (East Fishkill Provisions). The one on Rte. 52 is very close to I-84.

Growing up in Dutchess County and having grandparents who emigrated from Germany, we were partial to Karl Ehmer - he and his wife used to drive identical S-class Mercedes with Pork One and Pork Two license plates.

The family still owns the Ehmer name and their shops are still terrific - there are quite a few down in the city and Long Island, but there's still one in Danbury and one across the border in Poughquag, New York.

Heading there tomorrow as a matter of fact. Need to supplement their breakfast sausage supply due to increased commitmnets to my Saturday tailgate.

If you haven't tried it their German potato salad is fantastic.
