Richardson refused and resigned in protest. Nixon then ordered Assistant AG William Ruckelshaus to fire Cox. Ruckelshaus, like Richardson, refused and resigned in protest. Nixon then ordered Solicitor General Robert Bork to fire Cox. Bork complied. All in one night.
