Sad news this past week for those HS football fans. John Skubel who coached Maloney-Meriden, Woodrow Wilson and Middletown HS and had 3 state champs and about 7 visits to the champ games in the 70's-80's, passed away last weekend. If you knew him you know what an impact he had not only on football but on the kids he coached as far as life and growing up. Proof was at the wake where I saw many of his ex-players making their way to Meriden show their respect.

I played baseball with his brother-in-laws and got to know him playing golf with him quite often and he even took the occasional trip to Myrtle and Ocean City with us. A true gentleman, great family man and he will be missed.

I'm only 17, but I've lived in Middletown my whole life. Just graduated from Middletown High. He still had a big impact on the school community even today. The stadium was named after him.

RIP Mr. Skubel

He was my football coach in the late 70's and early 80's. He was a good coach but a better man. He taught everyone to give 101% all the time in everything you do.
