Corporatocracy at it's best.. even ESPN's not immune.

So they shouldn't try and make money?

The NFL is mostly broadcast over the air and lives in another ratings dimension from college sports.
YAHOO! will be streaming the NFL game in London this Sunday.

Is this the start of 'pay by game'?

I wouldn't be shocked to see the Networks keep their deals richer than ESPN. Good way to steal some of that content back.

I think this is exactly what will happen. The announcement of the death of cable is grossly premature. Some networks got bloated and overpaid for content (ESPN) others are better managed and are looking for openings like this (FOXSports) (CBS and NBC Sports).

I like SVP but his sportscenter is horrible!! Waste of time and $$$.

This is another blow to CT as people are leaving the state in droves. Hope those laid off can find work, tough to sell a bome in winter.

Espn is a mess, it's like MTV when they stopped focusing on music.

I don't understand why these companies do that - just stick to what you do well and don't monkey with it. Mtv=music ESPN=live sports.

ESPN has booked a lot of very long term deals. They saw the "content" issue many years ago and have been working toward that since almost day 1. I will say that schools and their leagues have gotten somewhat out-of-control. They may be killing that golden goose. I feel badly for anyone that was caught up in this round of layoffs. Hope they all find something even better.

ESPN's problem isn't a lack of sports programming. Their biggest problem is their results dominate the corporate Disney results and they have to prop up the stock price.

They have been able to monetize non-viewers for decades. They have to figure out how to grow the revenues as they lose those people. It's not going to be easy.

The hosts just dedicated Gameday to the fallen employees. Nice gesture.
