That's the correct final assessment of his time as HC.

He had decent defenses, had a decent recruiting pipeline but was tied at the hip to GD which did him in.

His defense in coordination with Don Brown, put on a hell of performance against Teddy Bridgewater and Louisville that one year. P made a conscious decision to dial “down” the pressure for that one game. For one game, he was brilliant.

He couldn’t recruit and he doesn’t have the work rate required to compete in college football. He may hit sporadic success as a coordinator in the NFL but he hasn’t had what it takes to be successful college head coach for a decade or two now. He’s totally analog.

This revisionist history is absurd guys. Stop it.

Not suggesting he was ever going to be successful here, but he is a good defensive mind. The only guys we've gotten recently that even sniffed the NFL were players he recruited. The guy that came next was by far worse, but too bad, they school whiffed on two hires in a critical stage of program development.

Nothing to do now but watch the boulder be pushed up the hill again.

It wasn’t just GDL and the 15ppg offenses it was the lack of oversight on strength and conditioning. His teams were weak and slow. He was out of touch on the college game and tried to run it like an NFL team and the kids weren’t responsible enough. His seniors couldn’t put up any more weight on their last day on campus than their first. Remember those embarrassing pro day/combine numbers for guys like Yawin Smallwood or Sio Moore?

Saying that the only reason he wasn’t successful here was because of GDL is like saying Diaco was only bad because he wore red pants.

People need everything to be all black or all white. P was not an idiot, and overall has had a good career as a football coach. He certainly knows enough football. Unlike HCVV, he was not a total fool. He was brought down here by a combination of three things: (i) his personal rivalry with Edsall requiring him to take apart what Edsall built instead of trying to adjust it and add to it; (ii) his inability at an advancing age to relate to college kids; and (iii) his loyalty to GDL.

For the record I believe he was completely over his head as HC at UConn. Absolutely agree he was over his head and past his prime.

That being said, had he hired a competent OC and let the OC run his side of the ball UConn would have been in the 5-7 win range each year.

He definitely had a better eye for talent than Diaco (an extremely low bar to exceed).

If he was much better he would have been in the 5 to 7 win range? He won 5 games each of his full years here.

Why do you change the facts to fit your narrative then try and argue? The point was he’s a good coach. You inserted “head” and now want to argue a point no one made.

I don’t need to change facts. Pasqualoni and his low energy buddies provided enough for us. There was a reason Don Brown escaped.

He was a good coach though say some. In the same sense that terminal cancer is good for your life.
 
A good coach is defined by his loyalty to his players wellbeing and success, not his staff. He allowed GDL to destroy the morale of the players. He allowed Whitmer to take an ungodly beating up in Syracuse, and put him in harm's way repeatedly when the game was out of hand and the OL couldn't protect him. I will never forget that, because they was the clearest indication he lacked the fortitude to challenge his staff and do the right thing.

He’s not a good coach period. Name one successful team he has been a part of since he was fired by Syracuse. So just stop. He’s one of those mediocre types who keeps landing jobs based on reputation in the distant past.
