Not surprising for a she. Most long-distance swimming records are held by women. From 5 to 35 kilometers, 6 of the 7 U.S. records belong to the distaff side, a couple by significant margins.

This girl was raised by a couple of salmon. She was born to swim.
I know she was never an Olympian yet I have heard of her and not because of her attempts to do this swim. Was she an Olympic commentator through the years?
She has done various feats of long distance open water swimming since the early 70s. She, also, hosted an NPR show on travel for a number of years called "The Saavy Traveler."
