Another top college basketball program could soon have a Hurley leading the way.

The University of Connecticut is homing in on Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley, according to multiple local reports, just over a week after firing six-year head coach Kevin Ollie. If the deal materializes, Hurley would be following in the footsteps of brother Bobby, who now coaches at Arizona State after beginning his coaching career at a couple of mid-majors.

ESPN reported this 20 minutes ago:

"Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley had conversations with UConn and Pittsburghon Monday and is considered the primary target for both openings but will sit down with Rams athletic director Thorr Bjorn on Tuesday before making a decision, sources told ESPN.

"He's not close to a decision yet," one source close to Hurley told ESPN. "He's still researching it all." "

Rutgers offered Danny before Pikiell and thought he was coming, but he changed his mind and stayed at Rhode Island. I think you should wait until it is formally announced. He would be a good choice IMO.

I think its safe to say negotiations are taking place. Pitt is probably saying the same thing. I think he will sign with UConn.

He's a family man with strong northeast ties. Its a big family decision and he should take some time.

I won't be surprised if he stays at URI.

He'd be crazy to. We pay Ollie about what URI spends on its entire men's BB program. There are several other A10 teams that spend more than URI does.

What happened to Stallings at Pitt?

They did the same thing UCONN is doing with Ollie...fired him for cause, trying to avoid having to pay his buyout. Their problem is they appear to have very weak grounds for it.

No, just absolutely no. Hurley is currently getting $1 mil per year. I just love it when people who have no idea want to make dumb statements. Stick to what you know.

You should follow your own advice. There are at least four other A-10 schools that have larger budgets for men's BB than URI.

Here's what URI spends on men's basketball annually, from diycollegerankings.com:

$2,784,810 is close to Kevin Ollie's 3 million dollar salary alone, as I indicated. This past weekend, URI fans lamented that their team has to fly on commercial flights because the school can't afford to pay for charters. They don't have the resources. For years Hurley has been trying to get the URI administration to increase funding for the men's BB program there.

The Courant reports today that Hurley currently is making $1.2 Million. It's hard to pin down the exact number since he gets a cut of the gate receipts. Yes, UConn can surely top that - and can also top whatever new offer Hurley gets from URI. But some people can live very comfortably on $1.2 Million a year - especially if the contract is guaranteed for 5+ years. At some point Hurley will likely move, but he has shown he is in no hurry. He will have to decide that UConn is a great job before he leaves URI.

It has been reported that UCONN may have offered him in the range of 2.3 to 2.6 million, roughly doubling his URI salary. Pitt has also apparently come in with an offer north of 3 million. UCONN may or may not be willing or able to match that. By most accounts he's leaning toward UCONN, perhaps whether or not they match the Pitt offer.

His family likes living in RI. The UCONN job would afford them the opportunity to keep a place there while doubling the money. For years he's been frustrated by the lack of financial support his program gets at URI, and he wants a practice facility they don't have the financial ability to provide. He may take his time deciding but he will leave, unless some URI donor steps up and finances a complete infrastructure makeover.

Thanks. Kind of a shocker. I see they went 0-18 in the league.

Pitt reportedly offered Hurley a little over $3 mil. UConn may need to be close to $3 mil. to get him. They may have to pay Ollie $3 mil. as well. They obviously erred on Kevin’s contract.

Hurley reportedly met with the URI AD yesterday. He's supposed to be meeting with his team today. It's likely an announcement will come on where he's going pretty quickly, maybe later today.

As for the Pitt opening, Sean Miller is in play for it as well. Pitt may either already know Hurley's not coming, or they're hedging their bets, but there is mutual interest being reported by the local media in Tucson for Miller going back to his alma mater. I imagine Miller may still be pretty raw about Arizona suspending him in the wake of the ESPN report, which was denied by him and has been portrayed elsewhere as less than credible.

According to the UCONN blog "A Dime Back" and Ed Daigneault of the Waterbury Republican-American, Dan Hurley will be the next men's HC at UCONN. Major donors stepped up to fund his salary offer at 3.1 million per year, in response to an offer from Pitt in the same range. It's not official yet from the school, but it should be formally announced today or tomorrow.
