taking a short break from march madness fever, to ask what folks think of the idea of endowing the 2 BB head coaching positions?
to honor past coaches (or a generous alum), they'll name the head coaching position after the honored person.

I think it'd be nice to have the Jim Calhoun Men's / Geno Auriemma Women's HC's officially endowed, once Geno retires.
The two coaches, under whose tenures UConn underwent its transformation.

That's a great idea.

One question:

Are you able to donate an amount sufficient to generate in interest annually enough to cover both salaries?

it's my understanding that there doesn't have to be a financial component to this particular endowment. Universities use this obviously as a way to fundraise, but if they want to name a building or a position after someone, they can just do it.

I have seen colleges name the head coaching position after their former HC who retired or died; there was no money exchange, they just did it.

That's what I was thinking UConn could do. if they COULD get money out of it, better for them; but it's not a must.

EDIT - maybe i'm using the term "endowed" wrongly. if "endow" by definition involves money donations, then i rephrase my question as "re-naming" of the HC positions.

I have long championed renaming the court "Hall of Fame Court". I would add Calhoun's name along one end line and Auriemma's along another end line. Not the full length of it, mind you but visible on each side. I would then add the names and numbers of every other Connecticut player or coach who has earned Naismith Hall of Fame honors, So Ray, Rebecca, Swin, Bird soon to be joined by Tarausi, possibly Hamilton, etc. I just think that it is a nice way to celebrate the basketball excellence we have had a Connecticut.

For what it's worth Dave Benedict balks at the idea, because the court is already named Alumni Court. I have to believe if you reached out to the alumni Association they'd be fine with the change, or if not at least be fine with "Alumni/Hall of Fame Court."

Now, the last piece of this puzzle in my view is to rename hillside as "Auriemma Avenue". That would put Gampel at the intersection of Jim Calhoun Way and Auriemma Avenue. It would also become an obligatory opening camera shot for on campus televised games. In that way, everyone gets there due and we get away to celebrate our unique tradition of excellence

I have no idea what this means. You want to name the head coaching position after a former head coach if some alum ponies up the $$??

What’s in it for the guy ponying up the $$??

The Alumni Association was closed and is now part of the Foundation.

there's no money in my scenario.

so... "no" to endowed coaching positions, i take it.
and i will assume the reasoning is we already have a street named after JC, so just keep going with that convention.

fair enough. thx

This. How has this not happened yet? Can we get some traction on this?

You definitely used the word endowed wrong.

But you accidentally got the premise right….something like this would have to be endowed. It’s never done for free.

Man, I hope he didn't go to UConn.....I was utterly confused by his proposal to endow two HC positions with rich people money and name them after someone else. There's a reason it's the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and not the. Jim Calhoun Pavilion.

It seems to be something more prevalent in private schools though UCLA is a good example of a school that does this. Mick Cronin is the "Michael Price Family UCLA Head Basketball Coach" per their website.

I do think the rich donors prefer their own name when they're contributing millions for this type of recognition so getting it named after JC or GA would be difficult. Some hoops alumni contributing to a pool to do this for each sport would be interesting though.

I always come back to creating statues of each coach out in front of Gampel or Werth. Problem is a lot of times the faces look absurdly distorted/creepy vs the person after whom they’re designed (Ronaldo one comes to mind). Or in the case of Allen Iverson’s looking more like a toy statue than a real one. But a street for Geno is a start.

Ronaldo one comes to mind)
Or this statue of Lucille Ball, which is the stuff of nightmares.

“At the heart of this commitment is a $10 million planned gift that will establish a permanent endowed fund in support of the head coaches of both the men's and women's basketball programs. The fund is proposed to be named in honor of the coaches who have defined UConn Basketball's legacy and present — the Geno Auriemma Endowed Fund for the women's program, and the Jim Calhoun and Dan Hurley Endowed Fund for the men's program. The Skinner family's gift serves as the founding contribution to each endowment at $5 million per fund, with the shared hope of doubling that total to $10 million per fund through the generosity of fellow members of UConn Nation. UConn Athletics welcomes and encourages others to join in building this legacy alongside them.

This endowment will provide long-term, sustained resources to attract and retain elite coaching leadership — ensuring that UConn Basketball remains among the premier programs in the nation for generations to come.”

The poster who started this thread must've known about this gift before UConn released this news, right???

yes i did. April fools!

Problem is that the spendable amount of the endowment is 4-5%. So you would need $100M to fund $4-5M in salaries. When you think about funding the big 3 coaching positions would need $300M to cover completely. Our endowment is $668M. So unlikely.

Most of the money that comes in for coaching and facilities is current use money not endowment.

This is the guy that donated $15 million to endow the 2 coaching positions. As well as support other athletic endeavors.

Skinner has donated $15 million to his alma mater, one of the largest gifts in university history. The money will touch numerous UConn athletic programs, with the bulk of it working to ensure that UConn basketball — both teams — are able to spend and operate in ways commensurate with success achieved and expected.

Hasn't he helped manage many coaches and former players wealth for years?

Probably, his company manages around $50 billion in assets and he's extremely close with the players and coaches. He's also a part of the ownership group which bought the Tampa Bay Rays.

He's great for UConn basketball and he's extremely generous.
