I did Mystic Pizza once. That was enough. No Julia Roberts and a ho hum pizza. If you visit Fireside Pizza I recommend passing on the cutesy named sandwiches stick to the wood fired pies.

Gotta agree on Mystic Pizza; also did it once…just once.

The railroad thing is very obscure; at one time it was the largest yard on the railroad but slowly died off and was gone by WWII. In its heyday more than 1000 people worked there and of course most walked to work – hence, the “Midway” neighborhood. It was revived during the Reagan “600 Ship Navy” days as a receiving/storage facility to support Electric Boat – those large buildings to your left as you duck under the tracks heading down to Bluff Point (which most Connecticut residents know as the site of the deer hunts) are all that are left and I don’t believe they belong to EB any longer, but that’s why I know of it.

I Google-Mapped “Fireside” - I’m sure that I’ve been there, but not since the early 90s. I will have to get back.

But for now, maybe it's time to get back to more important things, like the walk-ons...

The food up here is one reason that I am dreading our eventual move to So Carolina!
One more fun fact from one of the better pizza makers in the area. He is thinking of moving also to Charleston So Car, thinking of opening pizza restaurant there- biggest concern- because of the significant change in latitude and maybe barometric pressure? He says the dough doesn't rise as well and pies are not as good deviating far from our latitude!? Anyhow- i have no idea - but getting excited about Stanford!

I lived in Charleston in the early 70's. Great seafood choices and lots of bubba food but tough to find a pizza. I lived there again 10 years later and there were several good pizza joints. We visited for a couple of weeks a few years ago and there were probably a half dozen pizza joints downtown. Google pizza Charleston SC.

Don't dread Charleston. It's a great place to live. although I would not want to spend my life there. If you like the ocean, golf, history and warm weather you'll be in heaven.

Bluffton puts you closer to Savannah than Charleston. If you play golf you'll be in heaven.

Funny- my daughter is getting married in Hilton Head in June. When my wife went there to see venue, and visited Savannah- that was it- Blufton was it. I' havn't been down there yet, but i'm sure I'll love it! I'm a fly fisherman- but I know it's a golfer's paradise!

I was primarily a fly fisherman when I moved to Charleston the first time. I had lots of fun fly fishing for bluegill for a while but I ended up catching the redneck bass fishing bug. I did make a couple of trips to the Smokies in the western part of the state for some surprisingly good stream fishing. Google South Carolina trout fishing.

I don't know if I would call the coastal area around Hilton Head a fishing paradise but there is some very good tidewater fishing for drum, redfish and weakfish. I also caught a ton of freshwater and saltwater stripers there. The Cooper River was full of them in the winter. Santee-Cooper Lakes are known as the birthplace of the freshwater striper.

I haven't fished the area in almost 30 years, but if you love fishing I'm sure you'll finds lots to occupy your spare time.

I lived around the corner, about 350 yards, from Mystic Pizza, for 22 years. Before the movie, Mystic Pizza was a simple, hole-in-the-wall joint, and was the site of many a Friday night dinner for me and my young family. Walk down the street, grab a booth by the window, me and the missus split a pie and a pitcher of Stroh's, the two kiddos get a couple of items from the children's menu - good times. Put two dollars worth of quarters in the juke box, cut up the chicken tenders for the older daughter, take off the shirt of the younger one (she's two, and has ordered "kid's spaghetti": there's going to be tomato sauce from nose to navel). Very good times.

Of course, once the movie hit, Mystic Pizza became a brand and a destination, instead of a decent, very friendly neighborhood hangout. Ah, well.

The Pepe's in Manchester is quite good in my book. As is the New Haven anchor.

Speaking if New Haven, that town has five very solid places: Pepe's, Sally's, modern, Bar at Bru Room, Zinc pizza kitchen (also a good restaurant qua restaurant).

I couldn't get the feature, but Grimaldi's in Brooklyn was oft-fetishized in its own right.

Heard the same thing about Grimaldi's- is that the one right near or next to the bridge- if so my buddy in our UC group is trying to organize a trip there and then walk the bridge after-
