Has anyone bought a suit recently? I haven't bought one in over 10 years and it's time to get a new one. All of the places I would've gone have closed. Looking for tailoring when buying. Has anyone bought one recently and have any good experiences/recommendations to share? Thanks.

Not sure exactly what you need a suit for, but Suitshop has become a pretty consistent service for the weddings I’ve been in over the last 10ish years. Easy, affordable, and serviceable

Joseph A. Bank in W. Hartford center.
I was like you and haven't bought a suit in forever then needed one for my daughter's wedding. I had no clue. They were great. Then a year later, my other daughter got married and of course the color of the other suit wasn't right so I had to go back for another one. Now they like me and they're sending me special deals. I ended up buying a few puffer vests.

Depends on where you are and the budget you're setting and if you want 1 or more suits etc. I myself like SuitSupply because they have the transparent e-commerce model on pricing but with a few shops locally. One brick & Mortar in Greenwich--i prefer the Store in the Brookfield place Mall. You can get a 150's wool suit for a reasonable price. You wouldn't be able to distinguish that suit from a $3,500 suit made and tailored i Milan or Naples.

If you're not a suit guy and will probably never wear one again for a long time, try JC Penny's . They sell traditional blue, black and grey separates that are sized.

If you want to look sharp try Men's Wearhouse or like some one mentioned Joseph A Bank.

If you have a standard size, you can also try Amazon. If you get one at Amazon, they're cheap, but do the job. If you're a big guy, Amazon will be tough.

You can also try thift stores. I've never gone that route. Good luck

If you have a month, try iTailor. I gave them
My measurements, chose a fabric, a style, they sent a tailor made suit. I also bought one off the rack and had my tailor make the alterations (Saks 5th online). ITailor cost $250 and Saks cost $350 with $150 to my tailor for alterations to both pants and jacket.

I wore a puffer vest to my son’s wedding. It didn’t go well

Honestly. Men's warehouse in simsbury (really avon) get the manger..he was great

I have been to Men's warehouse

I might put one on if my daughter gets married. I would haunt the crap out of anyone who tries to bury me in one. Other than that, don’t plan to ever wear one again. Or a tie.

That said Jos A Bank is pretty good, and don’t forget good ole Macy’s. They used to have nice suits and measure and tailor them. I’m sure Nordstrom would as well. The Men’s Wearhouses near me all closed.

A very down to earth thread that I hope has been helpful to some people. I really like when OT threads start here, even if they eventually get moved. I value you as my reference group of sorts, and will often read about a topic that holds no current relevance for me, such as snow blowers, home repair, Scottish vacations, or even suits.

Last week I stocked the freezer with 3 of 4 quarts of vegetable chili that I whipped up pretty quickly in my Instant Pot once I finished chopping the sweet peppers & cubed zucchini that joined with the canned tomatoes, beans, various dried spices that came after the initial sauteing of the onion & garlic. And I learned first about the Instant Pot here.

This is a good way to sit tight and wait for a recruiting announcement.

But now, a neighborhood walk at dusk to take myself away from this site.

This site has provided me with valuable information on purchases many times, services and products. Collective knowledge and personal experience beats the heck out of the web.

I have 4-5 suits. I always go to Joseph A. Bank. They also have marked down suits if you’re in a pinch. Tailors there are pretty good and turn around time usually isn’t too bad unless it’s prom season.

State & Liberty makes good stuff too. Will be getting my next suit from them. Last one I got was a JT Ghamo in West Hartford for a buddies wedding. Solid local store.

Macy's used to be my go-to and where I got my last suit, but all the stores around closed and I'd heard that their service has declined. My current suit is charcoal, almost black. Nice and still in style, but more of a funeral suit. I'm probably looking for a blue one that can be for other occasions. I can keep the current for funerals. I'd say max I want to spend is $250-300. I won't wear it often. We had a Men's Warehouse near me, but that closed too. Nothing is really around me, so I'd have to go a bit out of my area.

What's the average turn-around time?

If you want a really good tailored suit, I know a clothier that comes to you office with materials and you start from scratch
Material, color, size, lining, buttons, style..... everything you can imagine and he does an amazing job

I'll PM his contact to you

Oops, I can't send a PM to you

If you are in the area and it's in your budget, Mitchells in Westport. Amazing service and selection. I live in CO now and will still try to buy my next suit there.

if you're not an off the rack fit, Bob DeGemmis at Connecticut Custom Clothing in West Hartford is great

Be practical, make sure the pants have a "comfort" waistband (stretches).

I discovered almost too late that my only suit, that I needed for an upcoming wedding in early April, no longer fit due to some weight gain. I only had ten days to get a new suit, so I went to Men's Warehouse here in Central Florida. I told them that I needed the suit in 8 days and they were able to help me out. I needed minimal tailoring for sleeves and cuffs and the suit was available eight days after I was fitted. It cost just under $500 with the tailoring and I was complimented on the suit at the wedding. I work from home and I haven't needed a suit for work in over twenty years. I used to shop at G. Fox and later Macy's in CT but those options are no longer available to me.

J. Press in New Haven. Not cheap, but traditional and timeless and the suits never go out of style. Website is jpressonline.com if you want to see pictures and prices. If you are absolutely sure about your size, they sell them online too.

Not Euro cut suits like Men's Wearhouse and Joseph Bank, but traditional cuts and they have extra material in the waist that can later be used, if you gain weight in the future.

If you're in Florida, Dillard's department stores have good selections and tailoring.

Over the weekend, Mrs Diesel, my daughter and myself were talking about some outfits we'd need for an upcoming vacation. All three of us agreed Dillard's is our go to first stop looking for clothing.
