Did anyone else see Jay's commentary on how poorly college coaches behave? He commented that NBA coaches are held more accountable than NCAA coaches. He feels it time to address the situation. Also, said that if poor behavior gives some coaches an advantage that it needs to be stopped.

Bilas felt that Valentine escalated the situation with Cronin by getting in his face. I agree. In an interview Cronin almost apologized. His comment was that coaches like Boeheim and K don't have officials in their faces.

It may be time to address the issue as it seems to be escalating and moving into the stands. I've coached and it's hard to sit there when you are getting screwed by local officials who are friends with the opposing coach. That said if I behaved like Cronin while at work I would not have a job.

The officials need to be held accountable, they need to enforce the box and hand out the first T liberally.

The whole coaching thing is crazy in different sports……can you imagine if they handed out T's in football where these coaches use -bomb like we use the "and" and where they stomp, whine and throw tantrums every game?

Anyway Cronin, in his face or not, deserved a T, especially if KO deserved a T vs Louisville. His little tantrum was twice as bad and he was not held accountable. Pushing your coach out of the way as he's trying to stop you from throwing the game away is what got me. And it didn't stop there, later during a TO he lit up the same coach for something one of the players did. Hey it's great he apologized, said he has a "relationship" with Teddy V blah blah blah. But there's no denying he has issues or he thinks he's "bigger" than the officials and quite honestly his antics prove him to be more than passionate. He's a little a**wipe!

KO didn't deserve a T, much less getting thrown out. Cronin deserved a T, and probably getting thrown out. But there were at least two differences that hurt KO's situation and helped Cronin's: (1) Valentine got in Cronin's face; and (2) KO came out on to the court. Same with Boeheim.

Agreed but he got in his face because he already reacted with something that deserved a T or else he wouldn't go there……then his tantrum continued when he left, partially because of him getting in his face which left Teddy V paralyzed to make the call………but Napolean did leave the box many more times and was never cited (the announcers even made mention of KO complaining of an advantage!)……..

Again I agree Teddy made his own bed but the gus a raving lunatic….not just then either but with that little "Frank martin impression" face he likes to put on. "….from the neighborhood I grew up in.." Funny stuff Mick just by the way he acts he is the same kid who got his butt kicked all the time and now he's the king so he's whacked……..sorry, used to like his passion now I think he's an idiot who can't win a big game!

I decided to take you up on the challenge. Here's what I got....

Looks like you may be on to something, here.

They can make whatever changes/rules they want now that Calhoun is retired.

Amazing how we criticize other coaches tantrums when we had a pretty good 'throw downer' for years. I will say Calhoun was intimidating when he went at it with the refs with his size and all.

I think it's more of the consistency of Cronins tantrums that's alarming. He is behaving like a fool most of the game. But in some people's minds, as long as he's in the coaches box he can behave like an idiot all day.

Actually I think Cronin was trying to get a T and should have. In order to get thrown out he would have had to gotten a second T but he never got the first one.
The coaches rarely stay in the box but Cronin should have been warned and if he didn't stay put T'd up. Valentine is a strange ref.

I can't see how Cronin didn't get a T, but I like the guy. He reminds me a bit of Earl Weaver.

It it's interesting how the Cincinnati family reacted. The players tried pretty willingly to slow his roll until the blood returned to his brain. That is a good thing off it means they thought he'd appreciate it later. However, the abuse of the assistant would probably have me ready to kick his and quit. Did you notice the assistant taking a seat as the Fighting Irish Mascot went back for more? Don't forget the Xavier game a few years ago.

The problem with unsporting technicals is that it is up the individual official. If a guy is having a tough day off of the court and he can't separate it from what's going on between the lines, he may be more inclined to hit someone for less than what Ollie did in the Louisville game. Some guys are just more patient. Sometimes you let a guy go off because you know you blew the call and you give more leeway. There are other things that go into it too. This isn't like a t for hanging on the rim or dunking pre game, or whatever. There are a lot of variables and I'm not sure how you can legislate what constitutes a technical vs what doesn't when in the heat of the moment, you never know what is going to set a guy off.

Back to the OP: The behavior of coaches is out of control at all levels. The local IAABO board and the two youth travel leagues had a meeting recently to discuss bench decorum. The league didn't like how many coaches were being T'd and the officials board didn't like how the coaches were acting. Luckily the moderator was the head of one of the leagues but also of an AAU program and skill development academy. His idea is that at the youth and even AAU level, it should be about developing skills, players, and people, not winning and losing at all costs. He encouraged the local officials to toss guys who deserve it and the coaches to remember their roles as teachers and role models. It doesn't help when you have coaches at the high school level who act like this (the article is 5 years old now but not much has changed even though three of the coaches have retired).

It certainly does seem that there are more coaches behaving very badly this year, but there will be no change this year, maybe it will be next year's "point of emphasis".

Having said that, Cronin has a point. Valentine doesn't act the same way if its Pitino, or for that matter Ollie, Jay Wright, Jamie Dixon, Calhoun, Thad Matta, Boeheim, Izzo, K, any number of guys who have lost it from time to time. He pointed out a double standard, and he's right.

The difference between JC and Cronin is that Cronin never hits the "off" button on lunatic mode. He's been that crazy for 8 years. That people can't seem to understand that is really mind-boggling.

I like Bilas - like most people here I think he is one of the smartest commentators around-however - does anyone else think he is starting to sound a bit preachy and full of himself these days?

I can see why you would think that way. However, he speaks out, and the NCAA listens. He was very outspoken about freedom of movement for two years, look at the point of emphasis this year. He is all over the exploitation of athletes and the NCAA has taken steps about not selling jerseys on their site. I guess when you speak and people jump, you go with it until they stop jumping.

part of it may be that the sports world is getting a little outrageous as money keeps increasing. As money increases so does corruption and weird policies. A lot of rules and policies create controversy and controversy sells. Reduce controversy and page views, comments, and viewership of games could go down. Even something small like the type of material and color of a Lebron James face mask generates a ton of money for an organization like espn. As we have talked about many times on the Boneyard, money is driving college sports these days and not common sense. Jay Bilas just points out the common sense arguments that aren't being implemented.

Yeah, his speechifying against court-storming on Game Day yesterday morning gave incentive ( I think) for the OK State fans to storm it up in front of him.

Thing is...it was really really obviously off the Cincy guy's leg but Mick was shielded to the play.

Loved the warning to both KO and Cronin to say in the box with about 2 minutes left. Uhh they spent the first 38 minutes out of it.

I guess this explains why Stuart doubled down on KO. Ego was just too big to admit a blown call.

Absolutely, let's just say that Stuart is known by some to have an image problem. If you really pay attention to it, how many times do you see two quick t's on one coach? How often do you see the same official call both? It is very, very rare. As I stated that night, I wasn't shocked when he got the first technical but the second should never have happened.

I think they either need to go back to one shot for techs (like in the NBA) or have two categories, i.e. one shot techs for a Coach being outside the box, a player hanging on the rim, calling a timeout when only one is left...two shots for outrageous behavior or deliberate physical altercations etc.
That way the refs will have a lower threshold to call one and get things under control.

1. In that instance the official instigated so couldn't really give him a T
2. I agree with the announcers and poster that said Cronin was trying to light a fire under his team
3. In his post-game I thought Cronin was full of it. The stuff about being friends with Valentine was fine, but then the comments about him being the underdog coach that must fight against the tyranny of big-name coaches was more whining to the officials. If you are sorry about it don't do it again in your apology

Big difference in coaching out of the box and whining out of the box……..I find it very difficult to suddenly keep both in the box with 2 minutes left after you let Napoleon run free for most of the game!

With respect to Bilas, he may be getting preachy, but I don't see how you can be an intelligent human involved with college basketball and not speak out on a lot of these matters. It is a conflict to make a living off it and doubly conflicting to have his purpose be to make the games/players enjoyable to watch, but I think there is also then an obligation to speak about the many hypocrisies in the game.

In truth talking about setting an example in dealing with officials and safety via court-storming are soft topics. I'd venture speaking out on these is a way to manage the urge to burn down the entire system.
