Maybe I'm crazy but I swear Chinese food in Connecticut was way better 10-15 years ago. I've always had my go-to spot but would try others and they weren't too bad. Now a lot of places are absolutely horrible.

Country Cow is the GOAT. I dig Tasty Yolk and frequent for basically everything other than the BEC - they even do good tacos when I'm too lazy for Don Rene. But those rolls are far too rich and dense. Not trying for a pre-noon food coma.

I’m convinced people only think that highly of country cow for nostalgic reasons or because they’ve never had another BEC. Lived in NYC for years and it’s indistinguishable from pretty much any corner bodega. It’s good. Any competent BEC is good. But there’s literally nothing unique about it.

This is the way bodegas and many breakfast restaurants do their eggs for bacon, egg, and cheese and it's the worst possible way to prepare eggs, IMO. That's why it's better at home.


Eggs should be cooked slowly on low heat.

I haven’t found anything close to a Country Cow BEC in PA. Which is weird to say bc it’s so simple.

Not all bacon is equal. I like applewood bacon coated and baked with real maple syrup which supercharges it. In fact forget about the egg, cheese and bread, just put that bacon on anything and everything, cornflakes etc. Put it on a Snickers bar. Delicious, just don’t forget to schedule your angioplasty.

Unless it is a higher end sit down type deal, all the family owned take out in the state are all supplied out of the same wholesaler out of the Bronx and yeah corners are being cut to keep prices down.

Restaurants have gone downhill since Covid in Chicago. I have to imagine this is happening in many places. Price of ingredients and cost of labor have gone up and restaurants are getting away with what they think they can get away with to make more money. Skimping on quality of ingredients, skimping on portion sizes, and the meal prices keep going up. I'm surprised more places haven't closed yet but I'm starting to see more closures and I think the industry may be at a breaking point if changes aren't made.

It's a tough business and margins can be razor thin but people know when they're being taken advantage of. Two examples of historically cheap food everyone likes where things have gotten comically out of whack are wings and pizza. There are places serving mediocre/bad pizza for nearly 40 bucks a pie and the amount they're charging for wings is absurd and quality has gone down. I can tell you the ingredients they're buying aren't nearly expensive enough to justify the pricing. There was a wing shortage once upon a time but we all go to the grocery store and know what wings go for, the gouging needs to stop and the quality needs to return or we will see more and more places close.

Literally taking this all the way across the country, I am forever ruined trying to find a better breakfast sandwich after St. Patrick's Day 2021 in Fairbanks, Alaska. They have these free standing drive thru coffee and sandwich shops which are about 80-100 sq ft. One of them specializes in how the staff dresses. On this particular morning with the temps about -30 degrees, the employee handed me my coffee and sandwich wearing a see through green thong and two well-placed clovers. A $20 tip for an $8 meal seemed justified.

Yeah that makes sense. My local place is still pretty good, so maybe they make some more things in-house or have a different supplier. It's probably 90% as good as it used to be. The other places food all tastes the same. I always know it's going to be garbage when I get the seemingly same egg roll that I've gotten at 3 other places.

I haven't ordered wings in years. They all suck and are way too expensive.

Absolutely
It is a legit small kitchen. In the south and Midwest you can get quality food from gas stations.. we are not talking about a 12 hour 7 11 hotdog
