Are the Red Sox starting a cough drop company or playing ball?

Perhaps they are planning on playing for a revived House of David team
during the off season. (Geezer baseball reference)

That was exactly the origin of the beards several years ago.

Not a fan of the beards, never liked Harden's in the NBA, but there's no denying the Sox have had an amazing and unexpected (by most) season.

I will give them a great season, but you are correct. They along with Wilson and the A's too aren't good for baseball. Look at the Rays, clean cut and just play. The Fear the beard crap is not good for baseball. It looks like hell too..........

You talking to me?

I find them kind of stupid looking, but hey, it's their face, they can do with it what they want.

Most will completely shave their beards after the season. Also, if they do a rehab stint in the minors they are clean shaven and must start again. It is part of the parent club team identity and works for them. It is about the mojo.

Guess it's better than the beers and chicken mojo.

The Sox don't "just play"? But somehow I get the feeling facial hair and drama didn't bother you in the Bronx Zoo days.

I agree up to a point. I don't mind the neat ones. The worst example has to be on my favorite team--reliever Brian Wilson. He of the black beard and Mohawk haircut. But his ERA was 0.66 and he was the winning pitcher in last night's NLDS clincher over the Braves. So, I can't complain too much.

Still, the beards in baseball seem strange considering that beards are rather rare these days outside of baseball. Incidentally, it should be noted that the Yankees do not allow facial hair. Makes me wonder if that had something to do with the Red Sox players' decisions to grow beards.

What facial hair Waq......please everything was always groomed please show me anything as ugly as your teams crap.....next - baseball hats on backwards - respect the freakin game a little. And Gomes and Napoli with 2 or 3 buttons unbuttoned you can hardly read BOSTON should piss the organization off. But they they're winning..........

Good point about the Yankees. Interesting that the Sox allow more of that. I think some of it is the aftermath of Valentine - the management (to my understanding) felt the players were a bit out of control and Valentine was known partly for his tight rules. Of course he only lasted a year and now look where they are...

Incidentally, the Lady Huskies don't allow any tats to be visible. Players who have had them in the past had to cover them up with band-aids, or gauze taped down, during games. I know there is an image that Dailey wants the team to project, and I'm guessing the Yanks are similar in that respect...

Geno's not big on facial hair either......maybe the Sox can take a page from him....LOL

The beards are post-modern: seriously not serious. I think Morris gets it right his amusing Grantland piece, here.

Does anyone remember when Roy Campanella would show up in the spring with a mustache and be forced to cut it off? I think of it whenever I hear anyone favorably mention the Yankees policy on what my old track coach used to call "hirsute facial embellishments."

I only vaguely remember Campanella's mustache, but here's a photo of Pee Wee Reese giving Campy a shave.

Again not a Sox thing just a traditional thing......Wilson and some of the A's look ridiculous. I mean with all the cheating can we keep some tradition? I loved years back when Buck told Ken Griffey Jr to put flip his hat back forward during an All Star practice, said there is no place for that crap. AGREE

..says the fan of the team where Sabathia never has his hat on straight, or his shirt tucked in, and A-Rod plays wearing lip-gloss. If yer gonna tout traditional baseball values, and appearance, I really wish Yankee fans would worry about their own team first, then display their jealousy over the Sox.

Again not pointed to the Sox here, all of baseball.... and CC looked pretty damn good compared to those schmucks but here's a typical (sox) fan and one that never played the game!! Thanks for your input though.

Jealousy.........you're a funny dude.......win a few more first!
