OT Avelo Air/Tweed New Haven Airport

What is the best way to get to JFK these days? Don't want to drive. Not sure what is left of CT Limousine.
 
Avelo flies to several to several cities in FL

I grew up in East Haven (Staven) and Tweed was a prime bicycling stop as a kid, so the return to flying there was extra cool.

Most of the airport is in East Haven.
 
It's hard to beat flying out of Tweed. I've flown out of there on Avelo a bunch of times recently, a few warnings worth keeping in mind:
1. These planes have no plugs, no wifi, no snacks, no drinks. The passengers on the plane are not quite Spirit or Frontier level bad because it's Tweed, but in terms of amenities Avelo is pretty much dead last amongst any airline I've flown on.
2. If you choose a seat and pay for bags, the cost is similar to other economy tickets on major airlines.
3. Checking a bag can be rough, particularly on the return trip. Avelo doesn't have much of a presence in other airports, and very limited staff. Check-in can be a challenge if you need to check a bag...

All that said, it's a miracle to have 13+ non-stop routes running out of Tweed, and it is insanely convenient if you're prepared for the above.

Not a fan of Spirit. A few years back I had a seat that had no padding. The metal bar from the seat was right in my back. The woman who sat next to me couldn't believe it and gave me a sweatshirt to try to make it a little bit more comfortable. They ultimately gave me like $100 credit for a future flight, but I never even bothered to use it because flying on spirit was such a miserable experience.

Haven’t tried Avelo yet, but it’s on my list. Even if the airfare is the same, and the (short) flight is uncomfortable, I would think the time and cost savings, as well as the comfort, of flying out of New Haven would make it worth it.

I believe CT Limo has suspended shuttle service and just has private car service now, like Hy's Limo. They are a little less expensive than Hy's, but still not cheap. We will using CT Limo's car service for the first time tomorrow, to go to LGA, because I didn't want to drive. We'll see how it goes. I recently tried to price them for an upcoming trip out of JFK and they said they had no service available for the time I requested, so we are probably going to go with Hy's.

The other option for JFK is Shoreline East>Metro North>Subway>AirTrain. I am going to check that next week for our trip and see if the timing works.

For LGA, we would have to take Metro North to 125th Street and then take the M60 bus to LGA. I have done that before for solo trips, but Mrs. 8893 was not too keen on that plan, hence the car service tomorrow.

East of Mississippi short flights all <3 hours. PT and MT zone Avelo flights, similar with a Burbank base and mostly low volume regional airport destinations. Suspect some CT-based UConn fans may choose Avelo for upcoming NC State and FIU gridiron games.

None of them are reasonable nowadays, even Uber can be $200+ from lower FFLD county to JFK. The train/subway options are good as long as you don't have a lot of luggage, can be a real challenge hauling big bags up and down stairs and platforms, especially with little ones in tow.

I confirmed that the shuttle is canceled because not enough people were using it to support it once it returned after Covid service.

Their private car service was excellent.

Avelo Airlines reduces select flights following decline in demand

Avelo Airlines says they are reducing the amount of flights that are being offered to Nashville, Baltimore, Chicago, and Raleigh.

And here's what no one mentioned about the huge hassle that is (primarily) LaGuardia. If you're flight (outbound or inbound) gets canceled or delayed, or you miss it, chances are there's another flight that will get you to your destination (or home or close) without a ridiculous delay. I once got hung up in a security line in Fort Lauderdale, missed my flight, and was on another flight that ended up landing at LGA a few minutes before my original flight. Another time a flight was canceled, they sent me to HPN, and paid me more than enough compensation to take a 30 minute Uber to LGA to get my car. You get a cancelation or serious delay out of New Haven, good luck. Will also add I don't mind Bradley if I'm flying to a well-served destination, especially if it's a longer trip, love the $6 a day parking (I'm out of Norwalk)

I just booked Avelo to Sarasota, 12/22 to 12/29. Wasn't as cheap as I had hoped but I also paid extras for leg room and it is the holiday season. $522.00 round trip but I'm hoping the convenience of New Haven over Laguardia or Newark during Christmas time makes up for it.

You need to make sure you're using the Avelo discount codes for sure, which is the only airline I'm aware of where that's the case. But even if you do, once you account for choosing a reasonable seat and bags the cost is similar to JetBlue. No different from other value airlines. It's cheap if you sit in the middle seat in row 31 and can put all your belongings in a backpack. Otherwise it's about the same.
 
I didn't know about the Avelo discount codes. Breeze just announced HPN to Sarasota starting next month which could be a game changer.

they are right on the website but if you don’t put them in when searching for flights they don’t show these rates.

Have you tried not choosing your seat? That's what we did and it still sat us together. It's not just "middle seat in row 31"; I had an aisle seat both ways on a recent trip. The only thing we pay for is one checked bag, which costs $40 and can be up to 50 pounds.

Wayyyy cheaper than not only other airlines, but also other modes of transportation. The trip we just canceled to Chicago was going to cost $277 RT all-in for two of us, including the checked bag. The trip we took to Baltimore cost $300 RT all-in for three of us, including the checked bag.

To be fair, I haven't. But with 3 kids under 7, I am pretty particular about where I will or won't sit on the plane, so I don't like to take my chances.

On the relative pricing, every time I've flown Avelo it was HVN-MCO, and I was comparing to BDL-MCO on JetBlue, which is a pretty competitively priced flight to begin with because it's very competitive with a lot of carriers offering it. It's still cheaper to go Avelo, but not that much. And if you factor in the lack of wifi/drinks/snacks and the leg room of the average seat you're basically just saving $30 for a worse experience. I still prefer Avelo though because I'm home in 12 minutes instead of 60 though.
