Serena win in straight sets

Sloane goes down in straight sets to Wang

Some familiar names who have been bounced--Wozniacki, Hantuchova, Errani, Querry, Cibulkova, Stosur.

Big story this morning with accusations of match fixing among top men's players. Say it ain't so.

appears that Venus is about to get knocked out... ESPN2

Read that. Sounds very, very bad!

Lot of interesting results... none bigger than Fernando Verdasco's 5 set win over Nadal. Watched a good bit of it, but missed most of the 5th set (started close to 1AM my time). Verdasco was going for broke on nearly every forehand. Lot of errors, but also tons of outright baseline winners! My kind of tennis. Other notable men's losers... #11 Kevin Anderson to journeyman American Rajeev Ram in 4 sets. A real stunner!
Several women's seeds out, including #2 Simona Halep, #8 Venice Williams and #16 Caroline Wozniacki.

yeah I could stay up for that 5th set... didn't know who won, thanks for breaking the news to me

Great match - loved seeing Nadal go down. Verdasco was obviously overjoyed and looked fresh as a daisy in his post game interview with Courier. Seriously bummed to see Venus go out so meekly. Something was wrong with her - you could tell... After working so hard to get her ranking back up in the top 10...

Ditto, never been a fan of Nadal's game. Never been much of a Serena fan (too much of a diva), but I've always liked the way Venice played, especially how she's persevered with her health issues. What little respect I had for Serena evaporated due to the incident that occurred during last year's French Open during a match against Vika Azarenka.

The proper call would have been to award the point to Azarenka, but the chair umpire ruled that the point be replayed. However, Williams should have conceded the point because the out call clearly occurred after she had already struck the ball. What's more, it appears to me from her demeanor that she was well aware of that.

Apparently according to a report this week just another corrupt sport.

Next for Williams would be Sharapova, the latest in a rather one-sided matchup (duh). The Russian's last win over her came while Ken Jennings was still the reigning champion on Jeopardy.

Serena puts Sharapova away again... easily 6-4 6-1 :D

Any night in sports when Serena wins, Fed leads, the Warriors lead my least favorite team, and Tennessee loses, has potential to be epic.

you dont like the Spurs... aren't they what "basketball is all about" and "how the game should be played"?

Maria says all the right things, but does one not get the feeling that she does not mean what she says when she says that she enjoys playing Serena? I also feel that had Serena won Wimbledon in 2004, the rivalry today would not be as lopsided.

Serena at 34 looks every bit as dominant as Serena at 24.

Azaranka has been on the long road back from injury. She hasn't got her old ranking back quite yet, but it's coming.
She has won Aussies before, and I expect a real Serena-Vika slugfest.

seems to give Serena a run for her money, I wouldnt be surprised either way

Yes, but they annoy me just the same. Elated the Warriors came out and play-ee-ayed!!!

I agree. I think they are headed for a hard hitting final and it may come down to the serve, which is always in Serena's favor. As much as I think Azarenka will give Serena a good fight, I think Serena has her battery recharged and is not about to let the next shot at tying Graf's record slip by.

I'm pleased Serena crushed Sharapova. I can't stand her. I know tennis is a game of repetition, in the serve, the ball toss, the ground strokes, etc. But when she is on serve, EVERY SINGLE TIME, Sharapova will walk 15 feet behind the baseline, stop, stare down, clench her left fist, and walk back to the baseline to serve. I get that every player has his/her routines, but Sharapova is incredibly, annoyingly OCD. Her routine seems like an unsportsmanlike, time-wasting, take 10 seconds to get-herself-together move. But she ought to try something else, it isn't working, at all. 0-18 her last 18 matches against Serena...it's beyond a difference in physical talent. Serena is totally in Sharapova's head and completely owns her. She needs a shrink, not a coach.
