Patrick Winkel makes bold statements as Amity's catcher, slugger - GameTime CT

>>“As a hitter, he really hits to all fields,” Amity coach Sal Coppola said. “Defensively, he’s probably at a level of a high Division 1 college baseball player right now, throwing the ball to second base, which is just outstanding.”<<

>>Not surprisingly, many of the top collegiate programs in the country have recruited Winkel: Vanderbilt, Boston College, Duke, UConn. And perhaps surprisingly to some, he has already made his choice. Winkel will head up the road to join Jim Penders’ team at UConn and play alongside his older brother, currently a freshman outfield/first baseman for the Huskies.

Apparently, the good-natured ribbing about his khaki shorts and argyle socks didn’t dissuade him at all. “Seeing how (Chris) interacted with the coaches on his visit, getting to know the coaching staff, I really felt like they cared about individual players’ goals and developing them to the best of their abilities,” said Winkel. “And, you can’t beat playing with your brother.”<<

It was Amity's third straight SCC title (7th overall). They began their quest for an unprecedented 5th straight state title today with a 10-1 win over NFA. They will face fellow SCC foe Hamden (the teams did not meet in the regular season) tomorrow @4:00. Amity has won 25-straight post season games (21, in the state tournament). Its last loss came in the 2014 SCC championship game, 7-1 to Xavier.

Amity advances in Class LL with a 9-2 win over Hamden. Hamden took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the 4th on a HR and a sac fly. Amity answered with 3-runs in the home half of the 4th, 5th, and 6th to take control.

Amity will host #25 Fairfield Ludlowe (4-0 winners over #9 Southington) on Saturday @ TBA

Don't sleep on Ludlowe because of their seed; the FCIAC is one of if not the best conference in the state (and the one i played in). Five of the eight quarterfinalists in LL are from there.

Amity leads Ludlowe 10-0 after 3.

Not sure anyone is going to touch them...
12-0 final....Staples, should they meet in the LL final will be a good one. Amity won earlier in the season 4-0.

Not surprised... this could be their best team outside of the 2014 unit, maybe (and that 2013 team with Nepiarsky and Michael Concato). Agree that Staples would be a hell of a game if they played each other in the final. Was at the 2015 final where Staples was the heavy favorite, but got handled 8-1 by Amity. If Casparius pitches though, the result could be different this time. This could be Staples' last good chance at winning a state title. There isn't a whole lot of talent in the underclassmen ranks outside of Chad Knight.

Staples held on to beat Westhill 12-11. I believe Staples led 10-0 at one point.

Table's set: Amity vs. Staples. Probably the two most talented teams in the state in terms of college-level ability. Casparius pitched today however, so he won't face Amity. Should still be a classic.

Also, shoutout to Burrows. He's going to be an animal. Wouldn't surprise me if he's got a lot of draft buzz next year. Hope he gets here; wonder if he'll pitch or play the field.

Amity was a bit sloppy on the bases tonight, running themselves out of potential big innings. Junior right hander, Ben Lodewick, allowed just five hits for Amity. Danbury loaded the bases down 5-1, with none out in the top 7th, but Lodewick induced a 6-4-3 ground ball double play that plated a run. Lodewick struck out the next batter looking to end it.

Amity will have four of their top five pitchers available, including their ace, Max Scheps.

Danbury pitched around Winkel in all but his final at-bat, walking him twice. In his third AB, with two strikes Winkel hit a towering 382' triple off the base of the fence in right center to lead off the bottom of the 6th. He was subsequently retired attempting to score on a passed ball. But, he wowed the crowd with his defense. Danbury's catcher laced a single to lead off the fifth inning, if I recall correctly. The Hatters brought in a pinch runner. The kid got a great jump on the pitch and was moving. Winkel popped up with the ball but bobbled the transfer. It was a sure steal of second. So, we all thought. Winkel gathered and fired an absolute seed to second to gun the runner down by two feet. It was ridiculous!!!

Ok...my old age is catching up to me and my recollection wasn't entirely accurate on the Winkel play. Danbury trailing 2-0, tripled to center and scored on a sac fly to cut the lead to 2-1. THEN the Danbury catcher singled and was pinch run for....Winkel's cannon can be seen here. Forward to the 4:25 mark...

Amity did win.

Chad Knight was a stud for Westport on their recent LL World Series team. Headed to Duke, I believe.
