Oskar Giltay Commits to UConn

No doubt Reibe’s offense will be missed but if anyone was worse than Koroma on D it was Reibe. Good Lord if he tried he fouled.

This guy is more like Reed-lite on D which is to say Rebounds and blocks…rim protector. Hopefully can become Clingan like in 3 years.

Thing is Hines is a bit of a fouler too.
These guys are freshmen coming into Hurley's system - I wouldn't call them anything just yet until they get some UConn coaching. Both have great upside, awesome motors and a little crazy in them. We are going to have some dawgs this year - something we've lacked. Hines, this kid, Khamenia, Landrew, Silas all have dawg in them. I think it comes out in Mullins as well in year two.

Reibe had none. Utterly dawgless. Can't say Solo, AK, Stew had much. Tarris was too nice.

I've fallen into this trap too, but then realize pretty quickly Hurley's system counters with big guards and pulling these guys away from the basket. When an opponent has a Mara, not sure there is anyway to counter that with another big - he's unique. We outrebounded Michigan.
Strength can negate height, especially on defense and rebounding. Its why Mara wasn't a huge problem for us, and Reibe struggled against strong players. I mean Zuby was only 6'9" but was 240 lbs and strong as an ox. Look at Hines at 6'10" and 265 lbs, just 1" shorter than Reed. I also fully expect Oskar, who was only an 18 yrs old frosh, to become stronger and be close to 245 lbs next year (might even grow an inch). I am not as worried about height/size as the rest of you.

And big doesn’t mean good - Krivas was good but didn’t find him near a Mara. He was stiff and plodding comparatively. Mara was like a prey mantis meets a ballet dancer.
And the size of Illinois didn't bother us much either. The 7'1" Ivisic may have scored 16 pts, but it was on 4-11 (36%), kinda sucks for your center.

I saw this earlier but it's been a very busy day. Excellent addition, I like the athleticism and the motor.

Still might need a 4, though ...

Something like that. We're pretty damn short in the froncourt compared to our biggest competition for the things we want to accomplish. Michigan, Florida, Duke, and St. John's are all going to be incredibly tall. We're starting a 6'10 center and a 6'8 power forward with only 1 6'10 guy off the bench currently.
6-10 is fine, we just need one more serviceable PF in the 6-7 to 6-9 range. People have become so focused on height when we had a McDonald’s AA 7 footer and he was useless in the tourney. We are never going to recreate the 2024 title team which was huge at basically every position especially Clingan. We just need a rotational quality PF as Khamenia isn’t going to play 35m a game like Karaban.

Silas - 6’4”
Mullins - 6’6”
Ross - 6’7”
Khamenia - 6’8”
Hines - 6’10”

That’s a big team 1-5.

Basketball players at these schools are as dumb as anywhere else. Let's not kid ourselves here.
Does Stanford still have the policy that athletes must go through an acceptable admissions pre-read before they can get a scholarship offer? I'm sure the school had lesser standards for athletes than the regular applicant pool but in general they were offering kids who were very smart. Their athletic department was still very successful under that policy. Not sure they do it like that any more. I'm going to guess they don't.

Mullet and Mullins don’t rhyme! My goodness.
The Office Thank You GIF

Giltay? More like heel toe dosey do, amirite?
(Trying to add more country music references for increased Big12 compatibility)
I fought really hard not to do the heel-toe-dosey doe thing!!

Didn't want to show my age.

Straight up entitled thing to say, respectfully. We got to the natty game with three hobbled players, came back from countless late game deficits, but we had no dawgs? Come on man, just because people don’t bark like Cam did, doesn’t mean they aren’t dawgs.

I thought we would get bigger this year like our previous championship teams n compete with Michigan , Duke, St. John’s n Florida but I guess I have to see how everything plays out come November

Hurley has a theme going this year - freshman transfers, love it. The ability to assess at the college level goes a long way. He'll have the opportunity to glue kids like Khamenia, Hines, Giltay, County, Landrew for the next 3 years.

That settles that - next biggest box checked off. Next box is more of a guessing game as the need isn't as clear.

Hurley recruits with such intention. It's really interesting to watch how he canvases. I grow ill watching UK.\

What's the last line of this mean? Are you a UK fan?

FWIW I forgot that Stanford offered Karaban. His mother must have loved that. Northwestern did also.

Didn’t Stanford offer Okafor also?

Strangely, I didn't think of this year's team as dawgs either. There were more methodical, poised, unshakable. Not really the same thing, but just as effective.

If I recall correctly, Meka wanted to go to Stanford and they said no. He was signed in April, just a few months before arriving on campus

St. John’s gets Ejiofor back. Michigan gets their players back? This is a middle finger to kids coming into college basketball and the ones waiting for their turns. What is the premiss for doing this?
Not if they spent their NIL money already, which is my hypothesis as to why we are portal shopping with coupons so do speak.

Speaking of mullets, this event is going on nearby me this weekend.

the FloraBama Interstate Mullet Toss. Helluva a party. Fold up and toss a dead fish from the Florida line across the border on to Alabama. The dead fish get rounded up and donated to a couple of zoos and aquariums afterwards.

For the life of me I can't stand the taste of mullet. total trash fish. Some like is smoked and then drenched in mayo and diced veggies for a smoked mullet dip.

An absolute weird take.

It's a factual take. They're recruited for their basketball and you make the academics work later. I've been through this process with kids myself. UConn has recruited players who can literally barely read.

Basketball players are also just dumb on the whole. My college team could barely tie their own shoes and we won the conference

Now you are just trying to justify a dumb comment. Not like you.

I don’t see it with this player. Not sure if it is just about money at this point but from the film I watched he does not play as big as his 6’10” listed size…..not much vertical and not sure how some are calling him a above average athlete.

But in the end it makes no difference Hurley will make it work and we will be a top 3 seed come tournament time. It is almost a given at this point.
