Oskar Giltay Commits to UConn

I will neither confirm or deny that I've been checking constantly for this news. 😁

Welcome to the basketball capital of the world, Oskar Giltay.

Good thing he doesn't have a name that has potential to be butchered on the Boneyard. If you do, HooperScooper will find you. My plan is to call him OG from this point on.

The analytics vs. eye test are super divergent here. I'm excited to see what the staff is able to do with him.

His highlight reel was short and, based on his stats, apparently included every good thing he did this past season. BUT there were some really nice things he did, spin moves, quick twitch stuff, etc., that show me he's not just some lunch pail guy. I remember seeing similar Reed highlights from Michigan and thinking, that's a nice ball of clay for this staff to work with.

Soooooo many "Gil-TAY as charged!" jokes though. Lol

The screening factor is actually huge. Our 5s are screening all the time. It’s one of those really important things that gets lost in pts and rebs per game overemphasis
Opponents will shutter at the hard screens OG will be setting.

See what I did there? 🙄

This is one of those shrewd portal adds where he's a nice combination of analytics darling and blue-collar toughness down low. Rock solid freshman season last year and I'm hoping he sticks around for the next three years a la Samson, Whaley...
That’s the rub…….is he expecting to be here for a few years and develop (alongside Hines) or will either of them be impatient and transfer out. Hope expectations for both were set appropriately. Don’t want another Reibe situation next year.

But unfortunately that’s the reality with ANY pickup these days. Essentially a bunch of one year contracts with subsequent option years.

Trust the staff.
I trust the staff. I don’t trust the school’s Rev share allocation or its NIL budgeting.

We have the best coach in the country and I hope he doesn’t have to try to pull a rabbit out of his ass like he did last season. He deserves the best possible roster. We should be going balls to the wall as long as we have Hurley here.

Solo Ball needs to be replaced with a high quality scorer.

Now we have a 3rd player who can wear the Mullins mullet.

(yeah, I know it's a bowl cut, but that doesn't rhyme.)

I think at worst he will be a solid backup. Seems to have a great feel for the game. Really happy to have him on board.

Here are his game by game stats from last year. He didn't play well against the better teams and in those games he had a high foul rate. You can't teach size but they isn't a very strong story in these stats.

I have read different things about his wingspan.
One site lists it at 7'2"+
Another lists it at slightly shorter than 6'8" which would be very, very short for a 6'10"" player.
Anyone know the real deal?
Let's just combine them and say it's 6'11"

Pretty much expected and not really excited based off the stats. He is a big body and 5 fouls who has playing time in a Power 5 at least. Now let's see if we can get a guy who could play the PF and also slide over to Center if needed like Chol.

This is a great addition to back up the five this year and grow into position the next two years. He’s still super young.
They are both young. Now we just need a bargain price upper classman or grad student to push them

Screening ability can’t be understated - will be a massive upgrade over Reibe that way, solid base. He’s also a better athlete than Reibe, can move and elevate. This feels like the kinda kid Hurley intentionally goes after, not the Reibe profile. I’m gonna be curious to see how much HS recruiting Hurley does going forward as it hasn’t seemed to turn out great. For what we do, this kid is a better fit.

Once everyone realizes it's pronounced HEEL-tay maybe they'll stop
How long did it take people to realize Niels Giffey's last name didn't rhyme with Ken Griffey's? I think that was a solid year

Freshman or not, I wouldn't count on three years of Khamenia
I agree. I have a suspicion that Nik will be the 2nd best scorer in the team judging by his overall program fit, BBIQ, mobility, shooting ability and being underused in Duke’s line up at that position. If one watches his games, he had it all just not given opportunity to provide larger sample of his skills. He can even back a bigger player into the hoop with his agility. He can rebound well and has good court vision.

going on the record here that he'll be better than reibe was for us, and reibe was good.
