Have to disagree here. Nolan is more active and does little things better. Let's not get crazy about the job Tyler did on the very non-athletic Young the other night. Patric is huge and strong but let's not equate that to a scoring sensation because the fact he doesn't do anything but left-right and it helped the very slow and lethargic TO look good. Hey he did a good job on a perfect match up that night.....last night he comes in and looks like the chair he actually is, gets some crap from KO to move his feet I'm sure and barks back? Nope can't happen and shows the person he may actually be......the first guy went by the UConn defender and he came to help (nice job) in plenty of time and he then proceeded to turn sideways rather than take a charge or just stay straight up (he tends to do this and for a big man this is on the pu**y side), he fouled the guy and bitched to the ref and was told to shut up he was wrong.....and he was, he fouled the guy. Welsh was correct here's kid that thinks he should be playing more and doesn't know his actual role.......if he continues end the partnership soon!

Have you seen the screens Nolan sets on the perimeter? To me that is a little thingy that in reality is a pretty big thingy. How about that little thingy called free throws? Olander vs. Nolan? Winner the magnificent Tyler Olander. How about that little steal against Indiana at crunch time? Also Calhoun still started Olander on the national championship team. That is a a Hall of Fame coaches decision.

Has Tyler regressed some? Hmmmm YES he has especially off the court. So from that perspective a good argument can be made that he dug his grave and now must peacefully go there to die. I often think what KO and his wife must chat about when out to dinner at J. Gilberts and KO is ready to cut into that 24 oz. Porterhouse steak.

KO - "Tyler is working hard in practice. It seems like he is handling his business off the court and hitting all his free throws and setting All American screens on the perimeter my love."

Stephanie - "Baby just remember that Panama City spring break rap video. That was so creepy, disgusting and immature. Phil is the type of kid any mother would be proud to say his daughter is dating. He is just the sweetest young man! Phil will get better with patience.

KO- "OK honey...this homemade J. Gilbert's steak sauce is so refined and perfect like Phil that it is making me want to slap some TO upside the head the next time I see him!"

Stephanie- " Some Barry White tonight over some wine?"

KO- :) :) :)

Disclosure: Mauconn is da man.

I know his screens suck but watch Tylers he leaves early too. With these guys screens to me at least, are not all that important as D, help D and rebounding. Funny thing is they all pretty much suck at it but Nolan has gotten better and without a few touch calls which have not gone his way he has improved a little more than we've been able to see.......

Hey it's a toss up and everyone has an opinion and I doubt anyone can be right or wrong with the way these guys are inconsistent. I just think if anyone jumps out to make the biggest move at some point it will be Phil, much like last years last 6-7 games. We'll see........I just hope someone does even if you have to suit up BLUE........

What no threads when JC would drop F bombs and talk about a player being a complete idiot? : )

Not saying I am happy with TO's development nor his effort at times- and he should be getting his butt chewed out by the coaches- but he should also shut his mouth after what he has put the program through over the summer. Do your part -keep your head down and shut your pie hole. These things while not a big deal are disappointing from the standpoint he is the local player on our team and should be an example for other players and the State.

(I have heard reports he acts like a spoiled brat sometimes and he sure is making a case for the people who mentioned it earlier).

This kid ought to be thankful that he is still on the team. With all the problems and behavior issues that this punk has had I'm surprised that he is still around.

Time to grow up Tyler and be a team player !!!!

My point has nothing to do with his basketball abilities. It has to do with his character and inability to understand what is right and wrong. Character such as this could cause problems and be cancerous if KO continues to allow him to act in this tone or manner.

In fairness to Olander he is a team first guy. His demeanor on the bench (which we have seen quite a bit of over the years haha) is usually always very positive and very team orientated. I don't think that has changed. For what its worth it would concern me more if what is happening to him didn't frustrate him a bit. Sometimes it is just a process that needs to be worked through between coach/player.

Admittedly TO has not put much good will in his back pocket to tap into after his escapades on spring break. It was embarrassing behavior. I just think if I had to go to war that Olander would be in the bunker next to me not Nolan. If worse came to worse I could always look down and see that championship ring on his finger to give me a false sense of security.

I still want to smack TO every time I think of that hideous rap video, but more than anything he reminds me of a big, stupid dog that keeps up too often. And I think he needs to be ridden like a dog to bring out his most productive and effective use as a member of this team. TO knew that Calhoun would have ripped his face off if TO gave him attitude, and Ollie needs to find a way to instill that same fear/respect in him and train out the bad habits. When he plays within himself and keeps his head on straight he's not a bad player, although Patric Young pushed him around like a stick figure.

Good is our bad, this is big time hoops. You have it or you don't , you fit the team news or you don't.
I would expect being stuck on the bench is KO's only correction. Last year was TO's chance and he was not up to it. Then, he was stupid 2x. The other players are the programs future.
He should take what he can get. He won't get any minutes next year.

Actually the rest of this season is the future. Considering our ban last year and our horrendous football team coupled with realignment... the Stanford game is the future. Whether that includes increased minutes for TO is up for debate. The guy is not indispensable by any means. No players are other than Napier, Giff and maybe DD. Brimah could become that type of player over time (meaning this year).

Coming into this basketball season morale hasn't been at an all time high for UConn athletics. We lose Bazz (who is turning into 1 of the all time greats at UConn and Giff). Bazz will not be replaced next year with anyone comparable. He is an outright STUD truly capable of leading this team all the way to the National Championship. So I say the future is now and this season is very important going forward.

Olander has already produced in the clutch this year despite being a low level option. Who else has at the 5 spot?

Strange, because he started on a national championship team two years ago.

True, of course, he was typically back on the bench 5 minutes and a foul or two later.

I liked Tyler as an over achieving local kid but if he is developing a poor attitude, I'd just as soon have him off the team. We have all seen how poisonous a kid who's self assessment is dramatically off from reality can be to team chemistry. I don't want to revisit that. Back talking the coach during a game is never acceptable. Tyler needs to be ten toes in or watching from the stands. I hope he chooses the former and goes along for ride and enjoys his senior year.

Phil Nolan's game right now reminds me of Miss Dolley on the Gong Show:

You keep coming back to that one shot in the Maryland game. It was a great shot, no doubt, but we were still winning at that point, it's not like it was a buzzer beater to win after being down by 2.

You can't keep playing a guy solely because he hit one shot the first game of the season. We need rebounds, and right now Olander isn't providing that at all.

TO was put into the lineup to replace Brimah under 3 min to play on a dead ball whistle against FLA. He was brought in specifically to body up Patrick Young because Brimah hadn't shown the ability to keep young from receiving the ball so close to the rim. To repeat, TO was a defensive substitution for AB in crunch time against Florida. That says something about the confidence of the coaching staff at this time.

Now. On that same play he fouled out and gave up a bucket and 1 to young. Just sayin :)

Bro...the depth chart @ the 5 is slim pickins. What I am doing is looking at the totality of the work product. My point is what has Nolan done in comparison? Rodman he is not. I gave you a specific example (the shot/no not Tate), free throws and an article of how TO was an important cog in a key OOC win. When Nolan steps to the plate and actually does something that has substantive value I will be sure to give him credit. Actually I hope Nolan finds his game and is the player to get the majority of the minutes. Quite frankly I could care less who it is.

If Tyler never sees the light of day I want it to be because another player produces.

Exactly this ^^

My biggest fear with Ollie was that he would give the Olander minutes simply because he was a senior and thus slow the development of Nolan and Brimah. I'm pleased with the (lack of) minutes Olander has gotten so far this season. In four years, he hasn't shown any marked improvement in any skill areas and at this point can't be relied on being anything more than a tall body.

Lets face it though the last guy who's self assessment was dramatically off from reality was a big piece to a National Championship puzzle before he fell off a cliff. So that theory may have a few kinks that need to be worked out.

But in reality defending TO could turn into a full time job because he would be the type of a basketball playing defendant that could give you sleepless nights.

Nolan has twice as many rebounds, which isn't saying much at all because Olander seems to refuse to rebound.

I'm just not seeing the upside of a kid who seems to have a poor attitude and isn't really productive at all.

Not sure how Nolan has shown less loyalty toward UConn than Olander. His demeanor on the bench seems more enthusiastic than that of TO

It is typical of the Boneyard that people who don't really disagree seem to be arguing. So, let's clarify.

I feel that what TO brings is a known commodity. Nobody is going to stop coaching him and I hope he keeps working. Still, I do not expect game experience can improve his game.

The other players are freshmen and a sophomore. They do have upside and they are the future, later this year and forward. They need game experience. Therefore, I suggest play TO when his play suits the game or his fouls are needed. Late in a blow out, giving others floor time is in the team's best interests. I trust Tyler will bring what he has when he is called.

I disagree about the morale of UConn athletics. Football has growing pains, but HCPP is done. The men's soccer and field hockey made the school proud.

My main interest is in the men's hoop program. I am very high on its future and think the transition to Kevin Ollie has played out to be a best case scenario. I like the style of play, the earnest approach and overall classiness of the program.

True, Bazz and Giffey cannot be replaced, but Purvis, Hamilton and Cassell, plus possibly Boatwright and Daniels, plus the development of the the young members of the front court doesn't leave me depressed. I think you imply that it is all or nothing this year and next year we rebuild. There are some great pieces and we will be in very good shape if Boat and DD return. If they do not, we will have achieved to our max to get them into the first round.

Are you looking for that Ralph Cramden Honeymooners video? :)

This is a compare and contrast type of analysis (above). Thanks for the reb #'s which are equally as futile based on MPG. Nolan has the potential to be a better rebounder but we just have not seen the results yet.

Tyler is a good player who might be a starting power forward and leading scorer on a team like Fairfield or Quinnipiac or Central Connecticut. His skills fit the 4 and are offensive in nature. On this team, there are at least 6 better scorers and he'll never get to exercise his scoring abilities; and we have an excellent PF in Deandre and available time at the center which he just isn't good at. The team needs defense and rebounding and those are his weaknesses. It's understandable that he's dissatisfied because his skills don't fit the team and his career hasn't developed as he probably hoped it would. But, he has to overcome that disappointment and give his all to provide the team what it needs. One thing it needs is a positive spirit and work ethic and cheering for his teammates.
