"We make take a step back early but it's going to help the offense in the long run," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "All the coaches are for it to help improve the game."

"Well, you can expect everyone to play more zone this year," Louisville coach Jeff Walz said. "You're going to need at least two zones or you're going to have no players left."

Walz's team was highlighted more than a few times in a NCAA officiating video that all Division I coaches were required to watch or get fined.

I hope they extend the same protection to players without the ball. Most of the worst of the contact comes against players cutting through the lane.

And I'd love to see that video they sent to the coaches.

It's the same video/dvd they send coaches every year. They must "sign off" on it -- usually they get an assistant to watch it.

As I said all they really need to do is halt the grabbing and holding. Do that and it changes everything.

HA HA HA LMBO! Sure lets change the rules about the physicality after Griner leaves. Could you imagine this rule being in effect last year when she threw Dolson to ground not once but twice?!?!?!?!

I know. Thank goodness they didn't change the rules until AFTER UConn played Mazzante….

They do need to clean some of the play in the post area.

It may be the same concept, but it isn't literally the same video. This one includes a Faris play that I'm fairly sure was the most recent year. As well as a Bria Play and an Elene Delle Done play, which I believe were recent.

I'm sure that's what she meant. Each year the NCAA sends out a new video explaining new rules and points of emphasis. No coach should ever claim to be caught unaware.

Well, the impression I got from her first response was that it is a canned video, sent out every year. That isn't the case. They are changing the rules, and the video is emphasizing the changes including covering things that were not fouls last year, and are now fouls.

One minor example: I recently saw (but did not save the location), a web page or video illustrating how to set a screen. It stated that the feet should be planted, a little wider than shoulder width. However, the video emphasizes that planting the feet wider than shoulder width will be a foul if the ball handler trips over them. Not if they are within shoulder width, but a tripping foul if wider, so this means coaches must change their advice to players, or they will literally be teaching them to foul.

IMO, nothing will change. Only so many fouls can be called, and that’s that. The way to beat UCONN is to beat up on them…everyone knows this.

Great news for Stef too. I watched the game in person at the BET vs. ND and Stef was absolutely mauled.

I'm amused at how un-physical folks think UConn is, has been.

And yes, Phil, the DVD is updated every year to support the points of emphasis. How closely coaches and players watch the DVD is up to debate. As I said, all they have to do is sign off on it.

Of course, UCONN has been very physical. Some of it like other teams, some of it not. There are acceptable ways to be physical, occupying a space and refusing to cede it to another player, and ways that are not acceptable, grabbing and holding.

Sorry to be cynical, but here's my take on it. Most of the refs in WCBB-- not all, but most, and not very good. It takes real skill to referee a fast-paced game without a significant rule change. To implement the change and properly referee is beyond the attention spans and skills of most WCBB refs. Therefore, I predict that what will happen is for the first 10 games or so of the season, the rules will be applied brutally. Everything that even vaguely resembles contact will be called. The games will be totally disrupted.

(Boneyarders, consider what that could do to the results of some of UConn's early games with the likes of MD and Stanford).

Then, when the outcry becomes too loud, they'll go back to reffing the way they have in the past, maybe paying marginally more attention to contact. Net result: Next to nothing.

Probably so. I seem to recall that MD gave UConn a tough game because they played very physically. I would think the rules might affect MD a lot. But any change can throw a team off, and while I admire your confidence, and share your opinion, it's something for us worryworts to consider.

Just to remind everyone, as I understand it, we are not talking rule changes. We are talking points of emphasis. Specifically, a concerted effort by the NCAA to clean up the game by enforcing rules.

The rules changes for this year are:
- 10 second back-court, and change in closely guarded rule (eliminated in the back-court, 6 feet instead of 3 in front court)
- change in monitor use; most importantly, flagrant elbows can be properly evaluated (the committee felt too many flagrant calls were unjustly made), if there is an issue, the identity of the fouling player can be identified (previously only the identity of the person fouled), and procedures for determining 2 vs. 3 point shots.
- change in time outs, within 30 second of the media become the media, which will shorten the game by not having 2 consecutive times out so close together
and - a change in when the restricted area applies in Women's BB.

Sorry, I misspoke. It's not a change in rules, but I think the process will be the same as what I described above.

I sort of agree with you.

And, although your post "prompted" my response, it was really aimed at a number of posters that seemed to be implying a rule change.

Sadly, coach Duffy is probably correct, it is still going to be very hard to determine what is and isn't a foul for everyone, at least at the beginning.
