Today was undoubtedly a step forward for this program. Hope springs eternal. Offense will be workmanlike. Qb play is better. O line looks better. Ball security looks better. Stuff to work on but Diaco s b happy with this showing.

I also think the format limited Shirrefs some...a few times he was ready to run and pulled up and threw once he was essentially "tagged" and called down but no way the defender takes him down in a game. He was past the guy.

Walked the field after the game. Between the hashes was very sandy. It will need to be repaired. It is amazing what a different perspective from down on the field too. Great day for the program today. Very optimistic about the future. BTW, check out the CR board for another reason for my optimism.

What does this even mean?
It means that on third down, he seems to default to low percentage touch passes versus drilling a pass into someone to move the chains

That is the strangest seating pattern I've ever seen. Did someone break wind?
I was sitting right above those empty seats. Security was keeping people away. Looks like recruits and their families were sitting on the 50 in the half empty section.

My one Boyle observation : from the moment the ball is snapped, he stares down his primary target every. single. time.

? .... He's doing fine. Crappy WR's and an online that can't push a 2 defense
Forte... one simple concept that you must realize...Boyle still can not throw on the run and Sheriffs can...say no more...like whaler said sheriffs is your
starter.

He throws into coverage as if the defenders are invisible. The TD to INT ratio is not an accident.

He has to run. It will open up the field to better utilize the other skill positions. He will play until he gets nicked up. Is Garrett similar?

Yeah. Davis did that today too, but... Those were his first college snaps.

Yeah, Davis is nowhere near ready to be on the field in a competitive situation. Thank God they brought in Anderson - if they went into the season with only the three quarterbacks we'd have to make BS the Bubble Boy.

That is correct. He made some nice throws today but it is so obvious he locks onto one guy from the snap.

Looks like freshman qb will play in second half. He is put together

Tyler Davis doesn't look like a freshmen. I liked his command, body language, size, pocket presence, maneuverability and arm strength. I think he could be ready for prime time. Looks like a young Ben Rothlisberger.

My biggest takeaway was how improved the O-Line looked, particularly the White team. This may indicate better coaching but also more depth at the position.

We have some high quality TEs and RBs.

Noel Thomas is (still) the fastest player on the field. Diaco and staff need to get him the ball as much as possible.

The biggest negative is (still) the lack of a vertical passing game. With the exception of the late interception by Davis there were hardly any attempts to go deep. It will be tough to fully utilize the talent we have at RB and TE (and Shiffeffs' running ability) without at least taking some shots downfield.

Overall, I am much more optimistic after the spring game than the last two years when I left the games totally depressed.

Just got back home. Great day. Team looks a lot better. Some guys switched teams at halftime.

QB - Yes, Shirreffs throws better on the run. Would put him as the #1. Thought Boyle looked better in pocket, but when flushed out can't hit target.
Boyle had Lucas, Bloom & 5 walk-ons to throw to and had the second team OL vs. the 1st team defense. When he ran with the 1's, he looked good.
Davis will be fine. But, hopefully we can RS him. Needs more command of the huddle. Great athleticism.

RB - Johnson was OK before he got hurt. Battled thru it to play in second half. Marriner had a few good runs, but also put the ball on the turf.
Newsome is best out of backfield. DeLorenzo is solid, but not a game-breaker. Thompson had 3 dynamite plays, a long run from out of the end zone, a run where he moved the pile and a pass from Davis in which he made people miss.

OL- 1st team didn't dominate the 2nd team line like they should have. Pass protection has improved.

WR - Not a lot of depth. Incoming frosh have a chance to get on field. Noel Thomas is our best WR. Bradley made a great block on McQuillan's TD.
Too many drops. Lemelle caught some flares, but didn't break a tackle.

TE - Meyers had a couple drops. One may have been tipped first. He did have a few catches. Bloom was targeted early & often, but had a big 3rd down drop.
McQuillan is a tough-nosed kid.

Defense - Way ahead as always. Think we have a "lot" of depth everywhere. McAllister & Green don't have a lot of experience at CB, but can hold their own.

Specials - Puyol was perfect. Our 5th string QB, Rishell, came on and nailed a FG. All kicks were . Wain was MVP! Got a lot of height on all his punts (granted there was no rush).
