Thats because they just started letting players have a number above a 5. I guess it had to do with the refs calling fouls and showing the number with their hands. Jana was the first player I heard of having a number like 8.

The rule prohibiting first or second digits above 5 was eliminated beginning with the 2023-2024 season. So now there a whole host of new numbers to choose from up to 99 (assuming Geno allows it).

It was allowed in college basketball prior to 1957-1958. For example, Bill Russell was number 6 for University of San Francisco.

Can't see 7 and 9 together without thinking Mantle and Maris.

She adopted K9 at USC. I think that players should choose whatever nickname they want, although I can think of at least two instances at UCONN where teammates did the honors -- Brianna Stewart/Stewie and Breanna Pulido /Polly.
