Nowell in the transfer portal

And Kentucky lost 2 or 3x to Florida.
Yeah we had a bad in conference matchup, but we weren’t ducking any smoke by trying to have a different seed.

We played and beat the #1 overall seed. Could not have asked for a harder path lol

No bigs
Small guards
No excuses

How much weight/muscle do you think he needs to play in the big east?
Actually I thought when I first saw him that he was thick enough ala Khalid to get the job done
Are you talking about Nowell or Adams? Nowell was thick enough, just short. Adams is tall and very slight. He needs to get stronger.

I was talking about Adams who looks very skinny at 180 I think. Season opens in six months so not too much can happen between now and then but any hopes of playing will require more muscle for sure.

And Louisville couldn't beat Kentucky that year.
There were 2 examples of rock, scissors, and paper that year in 2014.

Louisville triple crowns UConn -> UConn triple crowns Memphis -> Memphis swept Louisville

Louisville, the team UConn could not beat, gets defeated by Kentucky for the 2nd time that year.
Florida, the team Kentucky couldn't beat in 3 games, gets defeated by UConn for the 2nd time that year.

All in all, Kentucky knocks off the team UConn couldn't beat in 3 games, and UConn knocks off the team Kentucky couldn't beat in 3 games.

rock, scissors, paper indeed.

In the end though, I think UConn beat Kentucky and Florida multiple times, so ...

Of the 5 teams in this round-up, UConn was the only team that not only beat at least 2 of the other teams multiple times without losing, but beat 3 of them!

UConn >> Kentucky
UConn >> Florida
UConn >> Memphis
Memphis >> Lousiville
Kentucky >> Florida
Louisville >> UConn
Kentucky > Louisville

The 2023 team was better than the 2014 team but it had a similar dynamic in that you didn't want to play a conference foe in the NCAAT. The 2014 team couldn't beat Louisville or SMU, it was good to see both get knocked out.

Yeah, it's hard to judge. Rip was slight and managed it. There are other guys who are stronger than their build suggests and who are so agile they can play at that weight. I'd like to get him to 195 or so.

That's not a good argument. Mark Sears was a first team All-American. So were Braden Smith and Walter Clayton, neither of whom are big. The fact that Sears had a bad game against Duke doesn't mean that guys his size aren't successful in college basketball. He torched us in the Final Four last year.

Nowell might very well have gone on to have a good UConn career, and he might very well become a very good college basketball player elsewhere. He didn't show it this year and we didn't have the kind of team where he could play through a ton of mistakes. And in 2025 guys aren't going to stick around for a couple years if that's the case. While having a 6-5 guy running your offense is a weapon, some people here have gone way too far in the conclusion that it's the only way to play.
A lot of this is who is surrounding that short guard and that hurt him but Sears repeatedly tried to drive to the rim and was stuffed. That wasn’t just a bad game it was bad judgement.
I don’t see Hurley going that small again but in Nowell’s defense if he had been given adequate PT to develop maybe we would have seen a different player emerge. What we did see did not measure up.

He either needs more muscle, or a tighter handle and ability to drive both ways with quickness. You can be wiry strong, it's not just about weight. That can slow you down. I like speed and/or deception at the guard spots.

There are plenty of guys that excel even though slight. Rip & Reggie Miller come to mind. Nowell was thick…how’d that work out?

I wish he can show the doubters wrong but I didn’t see much from him playing PG. He had no plus skill to distinguish him especially when he is only 6 feet tall. Good luck Ahmad!
He showed a good feel for the offense as a distributor but he was hamstrung by his loose handle and inability to handle pressure. Becoming an excellent ball handler is going to be an absolute necessity for him to have success even at the mid major level. He needs to keep defenders honest to have some space to work.
