November General CBB Discussion Thread (Non-BE)

Is Purdue great or mediocre? Almost blew it to 1-3 Memphis while having a UConn-Illinois Elite 8 level run tonight
They’re excellent - win at Bama best win to date. AZ vs 60% us wasn’t nearly as good.

All they had was access to cable $$ in 2 major markets. But that’s all B 1g wanted
And that generated many many millions of dollars for the Big Ten. I also say that the fact that New Jersey is densely populated with a little over 9 million residence didn't hurt them either. There are other things like being an AAU university and New Jersey being contiguous with Pennsylvania, but I think those were more "happy coincidences."

I have zero anger at Rutty for getting a golden ticket. I wouldn't mind getting a series of football games with them on the schedule based upon proximity.

Don’t feel bad for Steve

Steve Pikiell's contract with Rutgers is worth $30.8 million over eight years,

Yup. They added the B1G network to every household at 1per month just in Nj. I’m guessing they added it to nyc too since it’s the same media market. So B1G prob got in excess of 15m/month for giving Rutty 25 m per year. Makes total sense

Now if residents had the ability to selectively drop/substitute channels their revenue would prob drop by >50% imo

Perhaps they thought since he was coached by one of the greatest college coaches of all time he would of course be a great coach via osmosis. lol

cough cough KO cough cough... Although, to be fair, he was a really good coach in years one and two.

Was talking with a Rutgers fan at a party last weekend. (And, yes, I actually found one. I guess unicorns are real.) He said that the fans hate Pikiell. Last year with Harper and Bailey, they all envisioned making a natty run. This year, they are bitter.

(At one point in the conversation, he talked about "when (Rutgers) was good". I said "sorry, what?" and he repeated it. That went on for a few times until I finally said "and when was that exactly?" at which point he said "well, good for us on that we actually made the NCAA tournament." I deadpanned a. "Ohhhh" at which point the other guy who was in the conversation, just started laughing.)

i've said it on here before, but I feel like he was the best man for the job those two years… and the worst man for the job every year afterwards.

The feelings aren't mutual, at least not with the fanatics like us who inhabit the message boards. They actually believe their athletics belong in the Big Ten and that we are mid-major. Screw rutgers

This was from a prior game and I'm sure it must have been worse last night

Actually, the RAC (now Jersey Mike's Arena) is a fun place to see a game and can get really loud when things are going well for Rutgers (so not all that often.). Don't get me wrong, it's kind of a dump, but it's the kind of dump that really works well for college basketball.

So CCSU has played 4 division 1 teams.

They have lost to Quinnipiac by 22, and UMass by 7.

They have beaten BC by 1 and Rutgers by 13.

All 4 games have been played on the road, so no home court advantage in any game.

Are QU and UMass decent? Are BC and Rutgers that bad? Does CCSU just play to the level of their competition? I honestly don't know, lol.

QU has been by far the best team in their conference for like a decade now and just always chokes in their conference tourney somehow, usually in the finals and often times on a buzzer beater, its crazy. They are truly cursed.

Quinnipiac is actually very good this year. They could have a special season. On top of that, CCSU played awful that game.
As for the UMass game, Central fell behind by 22 before closing it to 5 with the ball with under 2 minutes. It was certainly a winnable game.
For those who don't follow CCSU sports, this year is a complete rebuild. We lost all our core guys from last year's team. Yet somehow Coach Sellers continues to work his magic with virtually no NIL money and very little support from the State of Connecticut. It'll take time, but Central will make some noise (again) in the NEC this year.
Keep an eye on my Blue Devils and root for us to beat Seton Hall next week.

Hate to say it, but Sellers to Rutgers would be a smart move for our Jersey neighbors (and a tragedy for CCSU).

He knows how to recruit the region, gets the absolute max out of his players, and evidently has already figured out how to beat both the ACC and Big Ten.

It would be cool to see ccsu have a special season, pulling for you guys

Quinnipiac is rated around 200. I guess it matters how you define very good. It is just amazing how bad Rutgers and BCU are.

Here’s the defense of Pikiell (prior to last year), and of his contract extension. When he was hired, Rutgers was coming off 10 losing seasons in a row, with a single top-100 finish on Ken Pom. By year 3, he had them more competitive - 78th on KenPom, 70 spots better than predicted. He followed that with a 20 win season to start a streak of four straight winning seasons, driven by elite defense. By Rutgers standards, being competitive in the Big Ten was a huge win! 2024 was bad, with a losing record and an anemic offense. To follow that with a losing season with Harper and Bailey was really bad for him, and the CCSU loss is a new low. All indications are he is a really good guy, it’s easy to root for a UConn alum, and he had success at Stony Brook. I just don’t know how he can restore fan confidence if he doesn’t turn this season around quickly.
