In today's Athletic, Sabreena Merchant writes about her most recent predictions for the WNBA draft next Monday and she thinks Sonia Citron will go third overall to the Washington Mystics.

In her blurb, she writes "With all the talent on Notre Dame’s roster in 2024-25, it was (Sonia) Citron who had the best on-off differential; the Irish were 8.6 points per 100 possessions better with her on the court."

Call her the glue, the Swiss Army Knife or even Coca-Cola back in the day ("things go better with...Soni"), this is not a particular surprise to ND fans. How many Irish fans -- watching on our TV sets or computer screens -- have "suggested" to Coach Ivey: "ok, put Soni back in. Now." It was a catch-all phrase since she first hit the court.

She'll now fill that role for other teams: WNBA, (hopefully) the U.S.A. International team (they'll just play better).
Soni is great!

I think Sonia was one of the most underrated players in women’s college basketball this season.

I remember when ND played UConn when Sonia was a freshman, and on the forum, there was a spirited discussion on whether Citron or Caroline Ducharme was the better player. Unfortunately for Ducharme, her injuries made the debate pointless in later seasons.

Hopefully, Caroline can regain her past form and make an impact for UConn. Any team that drafts Citron will be fortunate to have her. I hope she has a 10-15 year run in the WNBA.

Thy do seem like similar players - high IQs and cruise around the full court, presenting when needed. Do some of everything, handle, pass, defense, rebound, shoot - just always seem to pop up in the right place, at the right time.

Glad to see Cowles committed. These were my thoughts when we played Wake:

"A few thoughts from watching last night's game live.

I'll start with what is my biggest concern about this team. I don't know how highly regarded Wake's Hinds and Cowles are, but they had their way physically at the hoop with Karlen, Koval and Westbeld. Perhaps Ivey was looking to see how they'd match up without help, but they failed and were repeatedly outmuscled inside. Inside strength is our biggest weakness."

Welcome to ND Ms. Cowles!

I remember that and referred to that game on the Bench. Very athletic and hustled well.

So…is ND linked to ANY players in the portal? I mean you do need 5 players to field a team on the court…

Well, Niele Ivey has been known for keeping things tight on both the HS and transfer portal front. In the past, that's worked out fairly well when she was plugging holes, but now that ND would need to have a walk-on to field at starting team (Luci Jensen?), it's been...errr...nerve-wracking for the faithful on McGraw's Bench.

Here is a link to a list I've drawn up. The disconcerting area is the one you bring up: any interest (either way) between ND and the prospects. Once again, ND fans have to hope Ivey has had folks in and they're in the midst of checking out credentials or dotting "i's" and crossing "t's on letters or NIL agreements. At the very least, it's a resource for seeing where other portal prospects have gone! ;)

Nice post you linked there. To my eye, Todd and Webber look like really good prospects, not just because of the Catholic connection. I think they’d both thrive under Niele. Serah would be a huge catch, but she seems less likely judging from recent posts. Zania would be interesting and she might well like moving east and playing more games nearer home. And I’d also hold out hope for Oluchi. She’s a ND kind of kid from what I’ve seen of her game: tough defender and clever on offense.

As a UConn fan, I really don't like ND. But I always felt that Sonia Citron was their best player based on what she contributed to the team in all aspects. If she controlled the ball like their guards, she would have been an All-American IMO.
Very smart #3 pick by the Mystics, wish her the best in the W.
