Notre Dame, 2022-'23 Season

I don't think they will move up this week as tOSU and Indiana won this week and are already ahead of them. ISU losing last night will bump ND past them but we shall see in about 20 min
Ohio St, Indiana, North Carolina then Notre Dame at #7

UNC and Indiana U. play each other on Dec. 1st so we'll get a chance to see how those teams match up. Will be interesting to see if Grace Berger is back for IU. However, transfers Scalia and Parrish have stepped right into the rotation for Coach Moren.

ND, of course, will get their two toughest games of the year, with Maryland on Thursday and UConn on Sunday.

NCAA GIVING AWARDS TO MUFFET MCGRAW, JIM NANTZ FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO COLLEGE BASKETBALL

From an ND press release:

On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the NCAA announced Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw has received the 2023 Pat Summitt Award, which spotlights an individual who has greatly contributed to the development of collegiate athletes, making a positive impact on their lives. She was chosen by NCAA President Mark Emmert and will formally receive the award at the 2023 NCAA Convention in San Antonio.

In addition to McGraw’s award, Emmert has chosen Jim Nantz, the legendary voice of March Madness, for the Gerald R. Ford Award. The honor recognizes a figure who has proven to be an advocate for college athletics over the course of their career.

“It is such a privilege to recognize Muffet and Jim for their tremendous contributions to college sports over the course of their careers,” Emmert said. “When you think about the impact they have made and the lives they have touched, from the student-athletes to coaches to fans, it’s hard to think of two people more deserving. Their commitment to their professions is truly unmatched.”

Here's the entire release:

Sorry Irish

I don’t know if ND was looking ahead to UConn or maybe just MD is the best team they’ve faced this season. Both teams have room for improvement, but who doesn’t this time of the year. I was very impressed with Citron and Miller. ND has to shore up their defense if they want a long tourney run. They had no business being out rebounded by MD either. This was arguably the Terps best road win from the past 2 years.

For those interested in High School Recruiting, Notre Dame's place in it and/or ND in general, we pull together and update a recruiting report on prospects over at McGraw's Bench. It's a permanent thread, right up at the top. With the 2023 class signed, sealed and soon to be delivered (hello Emma Risch, Cassandre Prosper and Hannah Hidalgo), we're shifting the focus to 2024 and 2025.

Coach Ivey and her recruiting coordinator, Michaela Mabrey, are pretty tight in the information flow, but most of the names mentioned in the report -- and on this post -- have some evidence of "mutual interest," that phrase of Muffet McGraw's that I find adept in describing a recruiting relationship.

Anyways, here's an executive summary of whom (we think) ND is interested in. For more detail, please click on the link below, which also includes information on 2025 prospects.

2024 Prospects Under Consideration for Notre Dame:

Posts/Forwards:

  • Blanca Thomas (HG #9, ASGR #3, Blue Star #10), a 6'5" center from Charlotte, N.C. Catholic HS, who has received an offer from ND.
  • Justice Carlton (HG #3, ASGR #21), 6'2" forward from Katy, Texas and Seven Lakes H.S., who had a very strong 2022 summer circuit.
  • Kateryna "Kate" Koval (HG #17) 6'5" Post from Ukraine who is playing for Long Island Lutheran High School.
  • Kennedy Umeh (Blue Star #7, #27 in HG, #15 ASGR), 6'3" post/forward from McDonough H.S. Eagles (Maryland) and the Philly Rise, an AAU Club, an organization all the ND coaches know well.

Guards/Wings
- Kendall Dudley, (#13 HG, #5 ASGR, #1 Blue Star) 6'1" wing from Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C., one of the top HS teams in the U.S.
- Taliyah Parker (#22 Hoopgurlz, #18 ASGR), 6'1" shooting guard from Putnam City West H.S. in Oklahoma, who received an ND offer in October 2022.
  • Mikayla Blakes (#21 Hoopgurlz, #9 Blue Star, NR ASGR), 6'0" guard out of Rutgers Prep H.S., NJ. Received offer from ND in October 2021.
  • Chloe Spreen (#24 Blue Star, #28 ASGR, #NR in Hoopgurlz #2024 list.), a 5'9" guard who plays for Bedford North Lawrence HS, Ind. and the Nike LadyGymRats.

Point Guard

- Zamareya Jones (#11 Hoopgurlz, #14 ASGR) 5'6" point guard from North Pitt H.S., North Carolina. Will interest continue after H. Hidalgo commitment?

@dillion77 Why isn't Marshall part of the regular rotation?

Sorry for the late reply, but the pre- and post-game threads were rather time consuming!
As per your question, that's a good one that is openly discussed on The Bench.
While I don't have any firm answers for you (straight from Coach Ivey, that is), here are a few ideas that have come up:

- She's coming off an injury and the coaching staff does not want to rush her into heavy minutes.
(That said, she's looked complete fit and is moving very well, both within the paint and up-and-down the court)
  • Coach Ivey and Coach Owen (the post coach for ND) are trying to incorporate Lauren Ebo as soon as possible because she's a veteran (starter at Texas) who only has one year at ND. Have to maximize her stay. Ebo, with her obvious size, brings something that neither Marshall or the other forward/post, Kylee Watson, bring.
  • Speaking of Watson, she's 6'4" and the coaches and other players love her motor and her court presence.
  • Lastly, ND has 6'3" Maddy Westbeld at forward, a player many think is next most important piece of ND's puzzle after Miles.
Maddy, who has a tough season up to Sunday, showed her mettle in that game.

After the Maryland/UConn battles, ND has Lafayette and Merrimack, so -- hopefully -- there's a chance to get Nat Marshall some extended playing time, along with Jenna Brown, the transfer guard from Stanford.

Knock on wood, when Ebo moves on after this year, I hope to see Nat be a solid part of a post/forward rotation of Watson/Westbeld/Marshall during the 2023-24 season.

ND game at Lafayette Postponed

Via Raoul:

Hope the Leopards get better soon and that the game is rescheduled, in part, because the Lafayette campus in Easton, Pa., is some two miles away from Olivia Miles hometown of Phillipsburg, NJ, just across the Delaware River.

This news just broke over on ND's social media and on the Bench.

Propser attended the ND-Merrimack game on Saturday because most fans thought she was hanging around to see her brother play in the Marquette vs. ND men's hoops game the next day (she did).
However, this bit of news is very unexpected.

Remember, Prosper was a last-minute commitment to ND so to go from very-welcome addition to being a member of the team in a month is a whew!

How does she fit? That's a great question, too. Coach Ivey has consistently referred to the 6'2" player as a guard, although most of the footage I've seen would peg her as a wing. That happens to be where Sonia Citron, ND's versatile sophomore and 'Liv Miles' wing player, is currently manning the thought.

However, Coach Ivey has been experimenting with a lot of approaches recently, including one center and four guards, as well as a center, 6'5" Nat Marshall at forward and three other guards. So, this should be interesting. ND will now have 10 scholarship players and two walk-ons.

Would love to have seen her finish out the season with her team.

While this is exciting news, I'm also saddened by it. Would love to have seen her finish out the season with her team.

She's leaving her Capital Courts team midseason when they're the defending champs of the OSBA. Cripes, they had a game last Friday evening.

Irish Hit the Road; Beat Va. Tech 63-52, for First ACC Win of Season

It wasn't pretty by any means - heck, the Irish scored/were held to nine (9) points in the first quarter, but they took off in the fourth quarter to beat the heretofore undefeated Hokies. In doing so, they held the Hokies to under 30-percent shooting from the field, in a game that reminded me a lot of an old Big East game.
Here's a link to ESPNw write-up:

Here's some "morning-after" thoughts I posted on The Bench:

- Va. Tech was known for its clinging defense and that was evident in the first half (one could make an argument about poor shooting, too). However, as the game progressed, the Irish had a lot to do with keeping the Hokies to 52 points and under 30% shooting. Yes, Georgia Amoore went off in the 3rd quarter (note to coaches: work on high pick D), but the Irish were very effective.

- While Amoore had 20 (see quarter three) and Liz Kitley 16, they held the four other Hokies to sixteen -- 16 -- points. Taylor Soule shot 2-13, Cayla King 0-5 and Kayana Traylor 3-12.

- Irish legs were hoppin': they blocked nine (9) shots, led by Sonia Citron and Kylee Watson with 3 each and Maddy Westbeld with two. Westbeld's block on Traylor's baseline drive in the 2nd half was ballsy, because she had three fouls at the time.

- Tip of the hat to Westbeld for being able to stay on the floor (31 minutes). She played tough D (hello, Ms. Soule), scored 10 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and had 2 steals, along with the 2 blocks. Coach Ivey knew she needed Westbeld in there, too, and trusted her.

- I endorse anything that allows Sonia Citron to attack downhill, whether it's an Lauren Ebo screen or a ridiculous Olivia Miles pass from the baseline to a cutting Citron who went 0-60 in two steps and scored an "and one" layup. Bam. Hits the free throw, too. Citron also fumbled a lead pass from Miles but fell to her knees to retrieve it, then poked it to a cutting Westbeld for an easy lay-up.

- Lastly, kudos to Miles for keeping cool and not getting frustrated for missing a bunch of 1st half bunnies, then nailing the entire 4th quarter. At the end of the day, when she plays like this, it's simple: ND has Miles and other teams don't. She's a weapon .. and only getting better.

- Solid, tough win on the road, which will help for ACC standings and confidence. Irish have a home game against Western Michigan this Wednesday, go home for the holidays, then head back to the Commonwealth for an away game against UVA and ND alum Sam Brunelle.

"Irish have a home game against Western Michigan this Wednesday, go home for the holidays, then head back to the Commonwealth for an away game against UVA and ND alum Sam Brunelle." - And former UCONN Husky, Mir McLean !

Another impressive win today by Notre Dame vs. Western Michigan 85-57. That Sonia Citron is playing like she should be a very strong candidate for All ACC First Team.

Irish finish the pre-holiday break portion of their season with a strong performance against a game, but undersized Western Michigan team. WM had won their last three and had played some strong non-conference foes (Michigan, Michigan State), but wore down as the game went on against the much taller Irish.

ND shot 55% overall (50% from three-pt. land), led by Maddy Westbeld's 23 and Citron's 16, with Olivia Miles leading the floor game. Of the Irish's 23 assists, she had 12. ND also outrebounded WM 44-20, led by Westbeld (8), Miles (7) and Citron (6). Citron drew the primary defensive assignment against WM's leading scorer, Lauren Ross, who came into the game averaging 21.4 ppg and held her to 14 on 5-15 shooting.

The Irish, now 10-1, have a few days off and pick up again at Miami on Dec. 29, then at home against on New Year's Day at noon (what grinch scheduled a game that early on New Year's Day for a college student?:rolleyes: )

Nielle Ivey knows how to coach guards to the best of their ability. Diggins, Ogunbowale, Young, McBride, All the Mabreys, not taking away from Muffet but she continues with Miles and Citron. Really savvy guard-first coach

The Irish were blessed with two long-term assistant coaches during MM's stay: Niele Ivey and Carol Owens (who still is with Niele as Associate Head Coach). While "Coach O" has worked with/helped develop some fine bigs (Ruth Riley, Natalie Achonwa, Bri Turner, Jess Shepard, Maya Dodson), ND prides itself -- as you pointed out -- on its guards. And Niele has been right at the center of it. Interestingly, one of her former charges -- Michaela Mabrey -- is now on her staff working with guards, as well.

(BTW, another point guard she worked with was the four-year starter, Lindsay Allen.)

Next year should be fun with speed-demon PG Hannah Hidalgo, and long-range bomber, Emma Risch, joining 'Liv Miles and Soni Citron.

I am happy for Coach Ivey and her continued success at Notre Dame. I just look back at the Covid year and the so-called "experts" were writing her off as a coach. Saying that "Coach Ivey was in over her head". Like good grief. Give the lady a chance. That Covid year was tough. I believe Notre Dame finished at .500 or close to it. Coach Ivey's 2nd year, she had her doubters, but you saw what this team was developing into. They split with NC State last season. Beat North Carolina. Lost to Duke. Coach Ivey can coach.

Irish have a full week off between the Boston College home game and upcoming trip to North Carolina. Lots of opportunities to practice and work the kinks out and further integrate early-frosh Cassandre Prosper.

That included getting former Irish star Jewell Loyd to travel east of Route 80 from her Chicago hometown. Good -- no, great -- to see her on campus!

Since Muffet’s retirement, Jewell has been more receptive to all things Irish. Glad to see her back in the fold.

Dillon, how do you pronounce Prosper’s first name? Initially I thought it was pronounced “Cass Sandra”, however during the BC game, I heard Antonelli say “Cassand”.
