Netball was based on the original basketball. When I was a kid it was known as Outdoor Basketball and played, well, outdoors - rain or shine as a winter sport - on an asphalt court. What we now know as Basketball was called Indoor Basketball and played, funnily enough, indoors.

Outdoor Basketball was played mostly in British Commonwealth countries and was eventually renamed as Netball. School and club matches, at least down here, are mostly played outdoors on asphalt, although a lot of games are now played indoors on a wooden floor. I've seen it played on grass in Fiji!

Fun fact, the first time I played in the Newtown stadium it had an asphalt floor. A sprung floor was installed by the time I returned to Wellington, but the lowest row of seats, complete with numbers, was still there slightly above the floor.

It burnt down several years ago...
I also played netball on asphalt flooring, both high school and club levels, in Kingston, Jamaica 🇯🇲 And depending on the opponent, my coaches would have me play WA/WD, GA/GD, and quite infrequently, the GS positions. Those were great developing days of my life, that were enjoyed with my friends.

I remember as a teenager, playing on asphalt, it was like tackle basketball. No such thing as a foul unless the bleeding couldn't be stopped, then it was only a time out.
