Thus one key question - is the B1G's endgame 16 schools or 20 schools? If it is 16 schools and the B1G can shake the XII apart, UConn will likely be on the outside as Kansas (AAU and basketball) and Oklahoma (football) may offer more value than UConn (basketball and hockey) does to the B1G. If it's 20, I believe that the B1G will add Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas leaving 3 more slots and I feel confident that UConn adds enough value fill one of those picks.

But the Big has held to everyone being AAU and contiguous. Oklahoma is neither and won't be getting AAU any faster than us. So now what?

Research money ultimately trumps AAU. Federal grants and NIH funding has been dropping since 2005. It may finally level off or increase modestly, but there are many more schools aggressively vying for a slice of the pie. Private funding has stepped in somewhat, but much of the investment has found its way to elite private institutions. Additionally private investment could diminish if company profits come under pressure in the coming years. Uniquely, UConn has a billion dollar plus commitment from the state that few universities can point to. The commitment has already secured substantial private and public investment and partnerships—and with only a fraction of the state funds implemented. UConn has positioned itself to be relevant in the research space in coming decade, and every indication thus far is that they will be able to execute. If not offered an invite to the AAU, UConn would be wise to choose their academic research partners carefully and selectively. . .

Kansas would make Oklahoma contiguous (and Oklahoma would make Texas and contiguous) an I believe that the value of Oklahoma's football brand and gaining a beachhead in Texas recruiting wise outweighs the negative - no AAU status. Oklahoma also add value in baseball, basketball and wrestling, which are minor points; but, points the B1G seems to take into account versus the 100% football focused SEC and XII. Basically Nebraska v2.

If offered, I do not think the B1G adds OK State as OU is a better brand, is somewhat better academically US News National ranking OU #106, OK St #145), and does not offer anything that OU cannot add while it makes no sense to double-down on a state the size of Oklahoma (3.7 million, OC TV market #45, Tulsa #61) when other potential additions (Kansas, Missouri, Texas, UConn, UVA, etc.) all would add value elsewhere.

Rest of the B12 begs for Pac or ACC; whoever doesn't get that life raft rebuilds the B12 as a "best of the rest" conference taking best of the AAC and MWC along with BYU to complement the B12 leftovers.

ESPN wants to cut costs, but Fox will get crushed on content if the Big 12 evaporates. If ESPN does peel off 2-4 Big 12 schools, I don't see it being good for UConn. Defensive expansion will be unnecessary, and ESPN will have sent a clear message that they are cutting fees, not adding to them, which means no expansion for anyone else.
