UConn is getting moderately shafted in the Barclays deal. A big name home opponent being removed from Hartford, going to the second-rate NYC hockey facility (Barclays is TERRIBLE, I repeat, TERRIBLE for hockey), and get paired up with an awful doubleheader game. Army-Bentley will be lucky to have 1,000 poeple in the building. I would be willing to bet the UConn-ND game doesn't outsell last year's Harvard-Yale game at MSG. I would be willing to bet you my diploma that it won't touch BU-Cornell, and probably not Penn State-Michigan.

It's a nice opportunity for the program to gain some exposure to the NYC UConn alumni base, but few recruits come from that area, so there's little to gain in that department. It also runs the risk of a UConn "home" game being heavily weighted in the stands to ND. If UConn hockey continues on the trajectory they're on now, this would be a great game to have in three or four years when the program has a little more buzz and, theoretically, success around it. Seems a bit early in the progression for this.

And of course, if the B1G offered an all-sports admission, UConn would leave Hockey East in a heartbeat, as they should. But you don't just leave the best conference in the country in a particular sport for the heck of it, the standing offer has to be there for all sports. A B1G associate membership invite in hockey only is a pipe dream, not happening. All sports is a much more likely scenario.

I think it's great for UCONN. Nothing beats NYC in the fall. A short subway ride from Grand Central to Brooklyn. I think there will be a pretty big turnout from UCONN fans. If this were basketball, I'd fully agree. With it being hockey, Barclays not having the cache of MSG in that sport, and UConn still early in the hockey development process, I think this could go either way of being a positive or negative overall for the program.

We played UMASS-Lowell as a third (non-conference) game at Webster. I would lean to thinking that we play ND twice for conference AND Barclays being a third non-conference tilt. Why? Precisely why brassbonanza opined: ND is a good draw in Hartford; we are a good draw in South Bend.

No, UConn is not being "shafted" because no one did this to UConn. UConn has elected to take this opportunity because it believes that the extra money and exposure is worth it to UConn versus playing the game at home. But UConn is not being "shafted" every time they elect to do something that you might not believe is in its best interests.

I love it! I can finally get to a hockey game easily.
As mentioned above, it's a 20 minute ride on the 4/5 from Garnad Central to Atlantic Ave-Braclay's stop. It's a 20 minute ride on the 2/3 from Penn Station. Taking LIRR? Transfer at Jamaica to Atlantic Terminal. The B,Q,2,3,4,5, and LIRR trains all run to Atlantic-Barclay's stop. Easy access if you're in the metro NY area.

Plus... you can get from Grand Central to your seat in Barclay's a lot faster than you can get to your seat in MSG, leaving even more time for cocktails pre and post game. No shlepping to the Shuttle, transferring to the 2/3 to Penn, then dealing with the 10ooooooo escalators to get to your seat.

No they didn't, the ND h/h last year was an anomaly. Every other scheduled HE series for ND was 2 home or 2 away for ND. If this is the case, I anticipate UConn will play two in South Bend in 16-17. 0% chance ND gave up a home game for this. It's either 3rd OOC game or UConn home game.

UConn has elected to take this opportunity because it believes that the extra money and exposure is worth it to UConn versus playing the game at home. But UConn is not being "shafted" every time they elect to do something that you might not believe is in its best interests.

If, as has been reported, UConn loses a home game in Hartford for this, and if by chance they do the ND home/home again, meaning ND doesn't play in Hartford, then yes, UConn is getting shafted.

The one unfortunate thing is that the Giants are playing the Saints in New Orleans that day (what would have been perfect is if the Giant game were a week later, one day after we play Tulane) but for a fan base that believes it has a presence in NYC, there is nothing about this game that can't be viewed as a positive (despite what a few people are claiming). You are correct, if you are a UConn fan (or just a hockey fan) and you can make it to this game, there is no reason not to make it to this game.

On a side note, my son's girlfriend is from East Williston LI (a pretty wealthy NYC suburb) where HS ice hockey is pretty significant. A little less than a year and a half ago I was at an ice rink near her home that had a lot of BC & BU logos in different places in the arena even a big Quinnipiac logo and a couple small UConn logos (along with about a dozen other NCAA schools). From what I've been told (from what she has heard from many of her friends) we are now viewed at a far different level than we were just one year ago in LI. This is a region where sports, such as hoops, football, hockey and even lacrosse (men's, which we are rumored to adding as a varsity sport soon) would help greatly in an attempt to claim as ours. I realize that there are posters here from the central part of Connecticut who believe that they and they alone should be viewed as UConn territory and resent the idea that NYC suburbs (including Fairfield County, which is part of Connecticut, although many CT residents from outside of Fairfield county will only grudgingly admit that) be addressed by the school.

This is idiotic as the school would be that absolute biggest beneficiary of a presence in Westchester, Nassau, the five boroughs and lower Fairfield county. Many here resent Notre Dame and their presence in many parts of the country but this is due to work they began a century ago (out of need at that time) in an attempt to attract fans in large metropolitan areas outside of their specific geographic footprint. We criticize Syracuse for advertising in NYC and knock Rutgers (and resent their membership in the BiG, due to their capitalization on their geography) yet we resist the idea of attempting to capitalize on ours. Hell if we want to be Vermont or Maine, we can. We'll just need to pull the plug on the athletic department and say goodbye to everything we've accomplished academically over the past two decades.

Of course they'd take it, thing is, chances are even lower than an all-sports invite. There isn't a lot of incentive to invite UConn as an associate hockey-only member if there isn't an invite for all sports, or an established and voted-on plan to phase in all sports over a period of time.

It's a demonstration that the B1G is not at all serious about actually having us as a league partner of any kind. It's a gigantic slap in the face, UNLESS it comes with a commitment that the league will be taking us in as full members by such and such a date, and/or making commitments to play us out of league in football and basketball.

Moreover it's a move that makes no sense for them anyhow.

LI year after year produces some of the top college hockey prospects in the country...and has a fair amount of kids alone in the NHL. Apple Core has had a TON of kids go to D-1 schools alone. Cav did very well on LI recruiting for BC...and I won't be surprised to see him do well there for UCONN.
