If it's of any relief Flug is talking out of his a**.

Big 12 expansion makes almost no sense.

Losing Houston would not be a big loss. Honestly, if the AAC were smart, they'd say screw it and add BYU as football only. Cincinnati would be a major loss.

The only reason these teams are being considered over us is geography. 100% plain and simple. We are too much of a geographical outlier for them to consider.

Yes, geography is an influencing factor. However, so is success on the grid iron, image, program perception, and recruiting bonus. Lets be honest.......as some Yarders have posted in years past, all of New England sends less than 2% of recruits to FBS schools on a yearly basis. Playing devils advocate, UConn would get a lot more money from a P5 affiliation, but where's the gain for existing P5 programs in various conferences. Certainly they don't gain an uptick in recruiting opportunities.

When they play their football games on the TV, there will be people from New York to Boston watching. That means more money to their AD overhead. That means they can better afford to send their coaching staff to wherever they want to recruit.

Important note:
Final negotiations/decisions by B12 with 3 leading candidates will not happen until after Deregulation has been passed.

Alex ‏@mason5plumlee · 5h5 hours ago
@flugempire Deregulation of what?

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 5h5 hours ago
@mason5plumlee CCG with 10 school Conference instead of needing 12. When rule passes leverage grows for B12 in negotiations with candidates

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 5h5 hours ago
I'm being accused of mentioning UH as a leading B12 candidate only because of an article written last night.
Funny...

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 5h5 hours ago
But this is first time BTM has given info on CINCY on sitting in great spot because of no serious red flags on candidacy from B12 schools

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 5h5 hours ago
No question perception in B1G has changed on who B12 is targeting.
No question I'm open to being flamed on being late to CINCY/MEMPHIS.

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 5h5 hours ago
But UH position as a serious top 3 candidate for B12 expansion has been in the position of @flugempire for months and months.
check TL

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 5h5 hours ago
We also gave McMurphy-ESPN a tough time when he stated BYU, because location, was not a B12 candidate.
McMurphy was correct
We were wrong.

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 6h6 hours ago
BTM words in April about Oklahoma's fallout/unhappy with the B12 were then echoed in numerous public reports soon after...
Very accurate

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
@headlikeawindow @Expansion_Crush OU has recognized its root cause problem in B12 and there is no solution because of ESPN/LHN hold on UT

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
@headlikeawindow @Expansion_Crush OU complaints are serious....will remain serious even with B12FB title. Makes no difference.

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
@headlikeawindow @Expansion_Crush B12 needs to expand and to create B12 Network by 2025. If not OU bolts to one of many suitors who...

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 4h4 hours ago
@headlikeawindow @Expansion_Crush ...who can push the Sooner Brand in ways which B12 can/will never do for Oklahoma University.

Greg Flugaur
‏@flugempire @agentmdo ESPN owns all P5 FB content in FLA.
Wants to keep it that way as long as possible, especially with danger losing some B10 content

Marc Ostroff ‏@agentmdo · 4h4 hours ago
@flugempire right...but Fox runs B12 so why wouldnt they want into Fla?

Greg Flugaur ‏@flugempire · 3h3 hours ago
@agentmdo ESPN has a part of B12 Tier 1...so no...FOX does not run B12.

If any of this stuff about ESPN blackballing UCF is true, it's a pretty brazen move by the mouse.

Flipper messed up when he admitted ESPN drove BC out of the Big East and he was taken to the woodshed for it by journalists (and privately probably ESPN and the ACC) to the extent he backpedaled and said he misspoke.

With these type of rumors out there, if there is anyone who can substantiate it, the network is really leaving themselves open to a possible civil suit from UCF down the line. The University could sue over potential financial losses associated with keeping them out of the Big 12.

Also, the other conferences could sue ESPN for colluding with the Big 12, ACC and SEC to manipulating markets and thus devaluing their product.

Lots of banter over at BC Interruption. This comment is what the ACC essentially struck out on.
"Sooooo 82% embrace the madness and fans from both sides have immediately embraced smack talkin. Can we put the "fans don’t want this game" argument to rest now?"

I jumped in the foray. I'm sure I'll be banned shortly, but I love to hate me some BCU:

What a bunch of nauseating holier than thou has beens. Good, don’t make the drive. You can bet UConn fans will. Grant is 100% correct. You’re level of butt hurt when you lose to UConn is going to be an 11. You’re the red headed step child of the ACC. Show me a game where you brought more fans than the number of years since Flutie threw a Hail Mary and I’ll be impressed. See you at the hole you call a stadium. Oh wait, you won’t even support your own team. Send your wife instead. We’ll have a great time.

Nah, that's a BU bar and too far from BC. Go with somewhere in Cleveland Circle. Getting the Boston Alumni Chapter to rent out Cityside in its entirety for a pregame would be an enormous slap in the face to BC fans, that's a huge BC hangout.

CitySide was all FSU for the game this year and all USC last year. It's actually pretty regularly the go to spot for out of town fan bases. The BC fans either go to tailgates or go to the holes that are Roggies or Mary Ann's. You can take those over if you want, but honestly, it's not worth it. Enjoy CitySide. Get an outdoor seat upstairs, it's nice. I'll be at a tailgate on campus.

No change in Big 12 expansion plans. Nothing happens unless B12 misses playoffs.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 3h3 hours ago
Needless to say the UH regent's comments to the Chron are just his wishful thinking.

Christopher Lambert ‏@theDudeofWV · 3h3 hours ago
If the scenario laid out by Fertitta was accurate he wouldn't blab to Chron. That alone should tell you something.

Mary Ann's...y You can take those over if you want, but honestly, it's not worth it. Enjoy CitySide. Get an outdoor seat upstairs, it's nice. I'll be at a tailgate on campus.

Have to pass on the offer to take-over Mary Ann's. I have a real ID that puts me several years beyond the demographics of that joint's usual clientele.

You couldn't pay me to go into Mary Ann's. And (directed at Tusky) isn't Roggie's bar still closed and only their takeout side open? Something about not cooperating with police on an investigation of something that happened there?

Cityside would be an excellent option for UConn fans to go pregame next year. It's walkable to Alumni, easily accessible on the B, C, and D lines of the T, not a lot of parking but nowhere around there has a lot of parking. Someone should pass that along to the UConn Alumni chapter of Boston as an idea.

That part of Brighton is particularly rough with parking. Go a little further up (north of Washington street), and there's plenty of parking.

Or, assuming the Red Sox are not home, plenty of parking around Kenmore Square, which is easy to get to from the MassPike and then just barhop up the B or C line to the game.

They live in their own little secluded asylum over there, but it is great comic relief. I don't think there is a more delusional fan base.

If Flug is right and BTN and ratings are going to drive future expansion, UConn is putting themselves in a very good spot.

UConn has had three nationally televised games so far this year:

Week 3 @ Mizzou - 12 Noon on ESPN 1.94 million viewers. Dwarfs UNC-Illinois on ESPN 2 by 1.4 million viewers and came within less than half a million of Michigan State-Air Force on ABC.

Week 5 @ BYU - 10:30 p.m. ESPN 2 1.24 million viewers. 120,000 more than the 7:30 Memphis-USF game on ESPN 2 and half a million more than Stanford-Oregon State in Week 4 in the same time slot on FS1.

Week 6 @UCF - 3:45 p.m. ESPNNews TBD. Here's a real test to see how well we can draw viewers. This was a game between two teams with a combined 2-8 record on a channel that not everyone in America even gets standard. For reference the game in this slot the previous week was ECU-SMU and it drew 84,000 viewers.

I'll update when the Week 6 #s become available (which should be in next day or so).

As promised, the #s are in for the UConn-UCF game on ESPNNews and it came in at 111,000 viewers, almost 30K more than ECU-SMU the previous week at the same time slot on the same channel. Certainly not a great number by any means, but again it shows that UConn consistently is outperforming it's competition when being broadcast nationally.

For comparison here are the 4 p.m. ESPNNews viewer numbers this season. UConn in the 6-digit club with Illinois and Indiana from B1G and outperforming their American colleagues and Northwestern.

Week 6: UConn-UCF 111,000
Week 5: ECU-SMU 84,000
Week 4: Middle Tennessee- Illinois 144,000
Week 3: Western Kentucky-Indiana 164,000
Week 2: Eastern Illinois-Northwestern 59,000
Week 1: Southern Illinois-Indiana 165,000

Thanks @NYUConn. I'd be curious as the availability (# of households) of ESPNnews in CT and Central Florida as I suspect in this small a pool of views availability may skew these numbers. I note that three of the 6 weeks listed involve an Illinois team. Availability may impact those numbers as well.

Can't say I have the info on that, but I know that certain cable providers throughout New England do not even carry ESPNNews. My buddy and his wife in Southern New Hampshire for instance couldn't get the game.

So wait, if Deregegulation passes, what would be the compelling reason to go to 12? The whole reason behind going to 12 is for the CCG but you would be able to have a CCG at 10 if Deregulation passes.

And, just for spits and giggles, if the B12 does expand, I'd love to see them take Cincy off the board as Cincy would be our main competitor when the ACC wants to add another. Cincy woud look nice because it would expand the footprint.

What makes you think the ACC is expanding if deregulation passes?

Yeah that part didn't make much sense to me either...

Because I'm thinking that eventually ND will have to join a conference and they'll need a partner.
Very unlikely we will join a conference. Even if we were left out of the playoffs fans(Alumni, which is all that matters) are content with our lot.

I'm not an Alumnus of ND but that seems to be common theme among them.

Eh.

You say that now, but if a 1 loss ND were left on the outside looking in compared to a 1 loss and/or lower ranked conference champ, Fans will be singing a much different tune...

I'm not sure plenty would be the right word, but a good amount, yes. The problem is it'd be a Sunday and the majority of those places are metered and would be running all day through 8pm. For those who end up driving up, I know of a few places in the Kenmore/Fenway area that you can park for free all day with no meters with easy T access to get down to BC. When the time comes next year I'd be happy to show anyone driving up where to look for that.

This is not the sentiment I've got from a well-connected ND family I know. They seem to think the writing is on the wall that it will happen at some point in the future.
