A challenging trip to Hawaii, a home bout with a current Big 12 powerhouse, a road battle against a former Big 12 stalwart, and a date at Madison Square Garden highlight the UConn men's basketball team's 2024-25 nonconference schedule released on Wednesday.

As many as five of those games will be against teams that could or should be ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 poll.

UConn men's basketball team's nonconference schedule announced. Here's a breakdown of the slate

This is the best OOC we have had in a while. Hope Baylor is at the XL Center.
Wish we would have played Yale and Princeton instead of Le Moyne and Texas A&M Commerce.

I think Texas A&M-Commerce (wth is that?) is the only one I don't remember hearing about
TIL (I was curious), A&M Commerce is the 3rd largest of the several Texas A&M system universities, the Lone Star State’s fastest growing university, and was founded as a Normal (teaching) school before becoming East Texas State and now TAMCU. AKA, typical early season low ranked opponent.

This is only their 3rd season in Division 1.

This ooc schedule stinks. LeMoyne? Texas AM Commerce? UNH again? MD Eastern Shore? Maybe 2 of those. I am not someone who thinks we should play Duke, Kansas, UNC and Kentucky. But how about. UMass, Yale or an A 10 team. How good is Texas going to be this year? We play Baylor only because of the Big 12 challenge. We are the back to back champs , maybe we should act like we are.

The consensus on Texas is that they're in the 20-25 range in the preseason polls. So that's a quality away game.

Read an article today that said our ooc schedule is rated the 10th best in The Big East. Only Georgetown has a worse ooc schedule

I don't know what article it was, but if they're doing it algorithmically at all our schedule will be underrated due to Maui best games being not "scheduled" officially yet. Most other teams won't have 2 more top 15 games added.

I have no idea what article you read but I can promise you it was garbage. Besides the fact that this is a really good OOC schedule, it is at a minimum significantly better than Seton Hall's released today

If I can find the article I will let you people know the source. If you think this is a really good ooc schedule you are really drinking the kool aid. Playing 4 teams that are probably in the 300s really kills out SOS. How about rewarding the fans who are spending big dollars to attend games with a better home schedule? I was a season ticket holder for about 25 years and gave them up mainly because of the cost. Over $100 to see LeMoyne?

It doesn't kill the strength of schedule when the other 6 games are against projected top 25 teams. It turns out it's more important to make a schedule that sets the team up to win championships than try to make a few fans who complain about everything happy

I don’t mind other people’s pockets, so if you no longer want to pay to watch this team because of their out of conference schedule, I love that for you. Fully support. Money is finite, spend it on things that bring you joy not angst.

However, acting like this team and their schedule is not set up to do exactly what they want to do (which is win championships, btw, a thing they have recently been very, very successful at), is weird and I don’t know what to tell you.

The sub-250 games kill SOS and we all know that.
But gaming the SOS algorithms isn't a goal or objective.

If you want to game SOS to look good on paper, schedule games against 150-200 teams. Results won't differ as compared to playing sub-250 but it looks better on paper.

I should clarify, it does hurt the old standard SOS metric. But that's not the one anyone cares about and certainly not the committee. The metrics the committee care about prioritize a big win over a really bad team instead of a win over a bad team.

Until that changes there's no reason to change how we're scheduling. Because I can imagine the complaints in March if we lost a seedline because we didn't schedule right. A way that has led to back to back championships

Treating long time season ticket holders with respect and planning a healthy home OOC schedule are not strengths at UConn. One or 2 cupcakes are bad enough never mind a full slate.
I am sure it will not have a negative effect on the overall team performance but to pay an average of over $200 (when you add in the peripheral costs they add) per game per season ticket to watch these obscure teams is ridiculous.
After giving up my season tickets 2 years back, I have become comfortable watching the games at home but do miss the Gampel games and those fellow season ticket folks I have known and sat near since the Fieldhouse days.
The times they are a-changing!!!
Can't wait for the season to start.

I suspect this is the article referenced:

It makes absolutely no sense for UConn to play teams rated 100-200 in the current setup. It is far more valuable in the metrics used for selection and seeding to beat the hell out of a team 300-350 than to beat Toledo by 12.

That article made my head hurt! That can't be the article @ucp990411 is referencing because it said last year's OOC schedule was rated 10th but this year's OOC is really good. Probably best in the Big East depending on how you evaluate it. So I guess we wait until he links the article he is referencing.

It's possible he just read it wrong, because it said last year's OOC was 10th by SOS (but better by WAB).

Paint Touches never misses, great article. Note my objection about MTE future matchups in a previous post, they actually did take that into account. Great work by them.
