Standing in the team's small, white-walled locker room before Sunday's practice, Kentucky junior forward Samarie Walker, who transferred from UConn as a freshman, shook her head when asked if playing Connecticut scared her or her teammates. "None of us are fearing UConn," she told espnW. "We can go player for player with them."

UConn senior guard Caroline Doty called Walker's words "bulletin-board material," and said stuff like that just adds fuel to Connecticut's fire. "We'll just prepare as much as we usually do and go out there and try to one-up them," Doty said.

I'm not a Samarie Walker fan. Her decision to leave during the middle of the season, certainly hurt her teammates shot at a national title in 2011 and from the comments, she does not seem to exude sportsmanship.

I'm perfectly fine with a player believing they can "match up" against your opponent, even if they're brash about it. Sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered.

Now, when a coach talks like that, and is proven false...well, let it be "bombs away" on his or her person.

edit: Summed up nicely with the phrase, "Fake it till you make it."

There was nothing wrong with Samarie's comment. Actually I wish Caroline didn't respond to it . Should Samarie say she is afraid?

I have nothing good to say about her and I suspect that whatever Doty had to say about her is notwhere near what she would like to say about her. Samarie Walker is a deserter. She left the team when they needed her most. I hope she and her team get their ass whipped.

I can't think of another wcbb player that I dislike more than Walker. Actually, I can't think of another wcbb player that I dislike. Had she stayed for the remainder of the year and then opted to transfer it would be different.

I wonder if Caroline was responding more to some of Samarie's other comments today:

"We're not going to be playing anybody like Kelsey Bone."

And when asked to compare herself now versus two years ago when she was at UConn, Samarie said:

"I have teammates who look out for me, who encourage me to do my best. Coaches who look out for me."

None of it that big a deal but I'm sure it raised some eyebrows among the UConn players and coaches.

I am glad Samarie Walker said what she said, it will be that much sweeter when UCONN beats them by 30!

Saying you can go player to player with a (justifiably) favored opponent is generally not a good idea. If she said, "We think we can play with them and look forward to the challenge," it's a total non-story. As is, I actually do think it was a bit inflammatory. It's a subtle distinction perhaps, but it is a distinction.

It's a subtle distinction almost like the difference between a very good team and an historic one. Some people might think that since UConn is now the only team that can make it to 6 Final Fours in a row, the NCAA games to get there were all historic. You'd be excluded, of course.

A) they haven't done anything of the sort yet. There's a game tomorrow that's kind of critical to that accomplishment.

B) Most people would disagree with you regarding every single game played along the way. As evidence, I'd present the poor attendance at Storrs versus the sellout in Bridgeport. But sure, if you think it makes you a better fan to attend every game in person, whatever helps you sleep at night.

I agree that any comments before a big game are meaningless.........Samarie has the right to answer any question like she feels....The game starts in 60 minutes.........We will know in 3 hours who is right........

Whoops.

Wow... what is the deal with when she was here? What happened? I thought she was homesick?

I'm starting to understand why she didn't fit in here and why her teammates and coaches may not have had her back. She can talk the talk but can't walk the walk.
