Ridiculous - from Des:

"SNY never really had any rights to broadcast UConn games. ESPN had and does have them. SNY showed games because ESPN subbed them out to SNY. Well this year and going forward ESPN, which has the AAC contract, isn’t doing that with SNY anymore and they’re really trying to get people to get into ESPN3 so that’s why you’ll see games there now and in the future."

Independence would be better as we could have our own deal with SNY....

Thank you Mr Aresco!

And good luck DVR-ing games you can't watch live.

This was bound to happen at some point. When ESPN was producing football & hoops games & outsourcing games branded as "Big East Network" to SNY, Cox Sports, etc., it was to create demand for surplus content. Now that the kinks SUPPOSEDLY have been worked out on ESPN3, the mothership is going all in with a Monopoly play. Sucks for those like my 88 y.o. mom, who love to watch their team but are either computer illiterate or don't own a computer.

I think Des is actually mistaken. The first 2 games are ESPN3 exclusives, and never would have been on SNY to begin with.

I have a hard time believing non-national games won't get farmed out.

Well....to play devil's advocate....if we went independent and we were on SNY it would be SNY only. Out of area folk who don't get SNY, wouldn't even be able to see the games on ESPN3.

Uh, you can generally watch replays anytime on ESPN3, so there's not really a need for DVR except, I suppose, for commercial-skipping.

Erm, thinking of it more, Des is 100% completely full of @%$!51$1. WE'RE NOT IN THE AAC TV CONTRACT YET FOR FOOTBALL.

I can't reply to his blog post as it's now under facebook, but I think he's jumped to a wrong conclusion here.

If our deal was with SNY then SNY could broadcast the games in their coverage area and sell them to other networks in the rest of the country.

One can only hope... I remember in years past, we knew ahead of time which games were on SNY and which weren't come start of the year. Currently on the UConn schedule website, we have 3 games with 'TV' listed. Towson (ESPN3), Maryland (ESPN3) and Lousiville (ESPN2). I'm afraid we may have to have the computer hooked to the TV to watch a fuzzy half ass picture for all away games. If UConn knew this ahead of time.....

Des isn't saying it's a new deal. He's only saying that ESPN isn't providing the content to RSNs like SNY any longer. And if true, which is very possible, it freakin sucks.

Think about this for a second:

1) Our 1-aa game has been an espn3 exclusive in the past (2011, 2009)
2) The Maryland game kick was scheduled for reasons other than TV, and bumped to ESPN3 for that reason

again, i have a very very hard time believing that, given that we're still under the big east tv contract.

Des is totally full of it here. There is an AAC Network, just like the current SEC Network on ESPN. It's syndicated distribution and was previously announced.

Maybe if Des spent a little more time doing homework, and a little less time tweeting about Syracuse basketball, he would have known that.

I guess it's only a shock to those who haven't been paying attention.

UConn is getting $2m a year in total for its media rights.

Manuel is an idiot and a fool.

Navy gets to keep its football rights.

What Manuel has done will hurt UConn more than anything.

I guess it's a shock to you that this isn't relevant yet?

ESPN3 is fine for geeks like us on the Boneyard - but it’s lousy for expanding the fan base. No causal or neutral sports fan walks over to their computer and fiddles around browsing for random sports content to watch like they do with TV. Can bars play ESPN3 games? Maybe I am wrong, but another major shortcoming is that restaurants, bars and other public outlets won’t bother to tune in...And that’s another fast way to lose relevance, even locally. It’s a powerful message of relevance when you walk into a food establishment and your content is on somewhere in the house. When you are invisible and have been replaced by other sports content you cannot grow and you are likely to lose ground.

I really enjoy SNY's coverage of UConn sports. The school gets dedicated shows and a ton of very positive promos. They actually make a good effort to ‘feature’ UConn as marque programming – something no national station will ever come close to doing.

And SNY, unlike other sports outlets, wants to sell a positive message for UConn sports since growing the UConn fanbase is important for boosting ratings and the bottomline. The distribution is great too, all of CT, NY State, northern NJ and a couple counties in pa.

We really should find a way to get content back on SNY and get out of ESPN’s dog bowl.

Welcome to life on the Ocho! I really do hope that SNY gets a couple of games...And why was Maryland scheduled for an odd kick?
I concur that Manuel is an idiot and a fool. Just add this to the list of incompetent actions. Of course he did get us a spiffy new logo, just like he did at Buffalo. By the time he is done, we'll be another Buffalo.

UConn requested a night kick for Maryland due to Yom Kippur.
