No from Geno | The Boneyard

No from Geno

Was there any doubt that would be his answer? I cannot speak for everyone, but I think he wants to retire on a high note. Wouldn't you?

In a lot of ways he has the best coaching job ever. Just because of what he has built, his coaching ability, and the legacy, he's virtually guaranteed 30+ wins a year and a final four berth at a minimum. Why leave there? He's compensated very nicely and he knows that the women's style, while aesthetically pleasing and pure, does not simply translate to the men's game where athleticism can mitigate fundamentals.

A comment like this is impossible to take seriously.

Seriously? From the "purists" standpoint, it is good basketball. It helps that we generally have the best 10 players in the building every game and the best coach in the history of women's basketball. That being said, do I want to watch it? God no.

He's no fool. He knows his chance at actual success in the men's game is slim to none and he doesn't even want to approach the subject.

These UConn women players are smarter than most posters, they get the difference. They live right near the other team and see how they react to coaching I am sure, they hear about it. Men don't listen all the time, Gabby is correct on that point. But you need to find the one's that do and KO wasn't very good at that for sure.

Here, maybe. Where he would go, maybe not.

No offense to Geno because he is a HOF coach and his record speaks for itself. The fact is he has zero experience coaching Div 1 men and iti is a different game.He would be a terrible choice.

Why would his chances of success be slim and none? Please enumarate, Deep.

He has no recruiting experience or ties in the men's world.
He won't have a roster with all-star starters and 5 star recruits lining the bench.
He won't have a 50 pt lead every single game.
He has no experience or proven success coaching the men's game and what he does now, does not translate over apples to apples.

Should I go on?

This is what the typical women's basketball fan cannot understand. Athleticism negates a great system. If you have a supremely athletic player(s), you can disrupt any offense. This is why Princeton at its height, with all of it's precision and "beauty" did not make much of a dent other than the scare here or there. When a big man is athletic enough to check a guard on a screen/roll or recover to block a shot if beaten or act as a goalie (a la Hash, Emeka, etc) you can disrupt any great system. The women's game does not have this especially when UConn, to our credit, HAS the best players who are also the most athletic.

That, and young women are not the same as young men, and the differences in coaches in being able to motivate and teach them is more important than their understanding about fundamentals and x's and o's (which every big time coach is capable of, albeit it to lesser degrees).

This is why former high school players are on the practice squad instead of former college players...

Geno was never coaching the men. Those that suggested so are morons. There is a post trail of your idiocy and you know who you are.

I know he is not going to coach the UConn mens bball team. My point is he is a great basketball coach. There is a big difference between D1 girls and D1 boys just like there is a big difference from D1 boys to D3 boys. Do you think JC is going to coach radically different because he has less athletic players? Coaching is coaching and Geno is good.
Deep - Point #1 he obviously has recruiting experience and he has ties to the mens game
#2 he didn't start coaching UConn with a roster of all star and 5 star recruits
#3 wtf
#4 he has 11 nattys (that's one for all 10 toes and one for a middle finger) Basketball is basketball

Not a single one of your counterpoints is valid. And you sound like an imbecile.

We can disagree. Your second sentence seems unduly harsh.

Kind of a pointless issue because Geno was never going to be seriously interested. Maybe 10 years ago, if even then.

There is a little bit of a condescending attitude by some of the men’s team fans about the nature of the two games. I guarantee that Auriemma and his players have no illusions about the differences. That doesn’t necessarily mean he couldn’t be a very good men’s coach or that he could be. We will likely never know. He definitely knows how to get the best out of his players and to instill discipline. Something our recent men’s coaching regime lacked. If men players are not as open to that level of dedication, it says something about them.

I also don’t think comparison to Princeton under Carrill (sp?) is quite there. Princeton was deliberate in ways UConn isn’t. Much more uptempo. Their biggest problem is few teams can compete with them so it’s understandable why some people don’t like the frequent routs, although I suspect that the snobbery some have about it would disappear if our men could do the same. It would not be a bad thing if we can hire a men’s coach with some good chunk of Auriemma’s skill.
