NIL is changing at UConn

This is what big time AD’s do.
It would've been easy for Connecticut and Benedict to be asleep at the switch NIL Payments first came out, or to "monitor the situation"" while other institutions took the lead. Instead, the university was smart and proactive. so, instead of running a step or two or three behind right now, we are positioned really well. There's many people that had a hand in that, but Benedict gets a good part of the credit.

Yes. Benedict has what we've needed from the day Lew left for Kansas.

To clarify for those not as old as the two of us:

asleep at the switch - AKA: the Jeff Hathaway approach

"monitor the situation" - Warde Manuel's how to make it appear that you're working while in vacation.

So Benedict can negotiate the NIL deals which are managed by the school, but not actually school funds. Or does this fall under revenue sharing. Or can UConn pay NIL directly to athletes. I really hate the whole structure so I don't know the details

Benedict is our guy. I think he embraces it and is here for the long haul. I have complete faith that he is turning every stone. I just like the guy. He’s been proven to be very adept at his job. I’d love to have a few beers with him. He’s got stories and insight that would blow our minds.

He was down with the normals for most of the first period and parts of the third during the hockey game yesterday. I was poaching his seat for a little while while he was out.

Did impress me that he was down amongst the fans. I didn't talk to him but I would have liked to thank him for what he's been doing

“I think the whole narrative around the fact that the Big East has this massive advantage is comical, in a way,” Benedict said. “And maybe it will play out that way. At this point, I’m very skeptical of that narrative. I’m not so sure that’s not just a narrative that is helping support individuals who are actually spreading that narrative to try to make sure they don’t fall behind, versus what the realities are. Because the suggestion that a group of universities that are getting probably 10 percent of what those [power conference] institutions are getting in media value — and we’re talking about tens of millions of dollars difference — that the schools getting 10 percent of what they are, are at a financial advantage is somewhat comical to me. The realities are, you can spend more of the cap on a particular sport. Well, you’d have to have the money first to be able to spend it. So yes, there is potential based on the formula and how things work, that you would have an easier time spending direct revenue share because you don’t have the massive investment that football requires. But you still have to have the money.

“Name me one school right now outside the Power 4 that is going to max out the cap. I’m not aware of any. It’s not because they don’t want to support their student-athletes. They’re not generating the same kind of revenue. Conferences are distributing, on the low end of the Power 4 levels, somewhere in the 40-plus million area, all the way up to the 60, 70, 80 million dollars. We get five, maybe. So how are we advantaged in that scenario, financially?”

THIS.

No matter what people like Nelson have told me in other threads, THIS is the reality. We've just gotta continue to do what we can for as long as we can, until the financial situation changes for us...

Wait, did you just agree with your burner account?

I've gotta imagine that I've been confused with UConnDan, HuskyFanDan, etc. The only way to remember which one I am is the constant reminder that I don't believe any UConn teams will lose a game in any of their upcoming schedules, regardless of roster or circumstance...

Well, that, and the fact that you're the one who was 97 years old when you join The Boneyard... ;)

I like how the judge is restraining the trade of people not yet in the system. I'd sue the judge for acting outside of remit for barring future participants

Forgive me because I’m not in the loop here. Is this because of the changes coming towards NIL or is this a bad sign of things to come? Jared has done great work with Storrs Central. Would hate for it to go away.

Sounds like neither of those… he’s accepted another job 20 minutes from his home base in Indiana (Butler). He’s been commuting.

Hi all,

Got some time with AD Dave yesterday for a pod. We talk about the House Settlement/revenue sharing and impact on UConn, the new era of basketball scheduling, Gampel renovations, and more.

Is that for real? A 100% offset? Why wouldn't everyone do this? How does the $5 million cap work?
