NIL has Reshaped how Coaches Look at Jobs

Brand is barely a thing. NIL and revenue share are paramount.
NIL and revenue sharing are most important, but so is a coaches ability to develop players for the NBA, basketball networking opportunities, ability of family to attend games, facilities, playing style, and brand to some extent, especially if the finances are similar.

Is that why Ajd went to Byu? Basketball network and family?

He's not exactly the norm. His dad was asking for equity in private high schools for his son to play as a 16 year old. There are plenty of really incredible players out there who want to make a cool million or two in college before going to play 10-15 years in the NBA

For new openings, sure - I doubt settled coaches with NIL and big buyouts are going to move because of a program's name anymore. It all comes down to recruiting.

Bit of chicken and egg here once programs land guys like Lloyd. He starts winning, he gets more support. Not sure why he'd ever leave, West Coast guy building rosters that are NC caliber, really not sure what UNC nets him that he doesn't already have.

Everybody's right and everybody's wrong here too. We cant say across the board that every kid has the same motivation. The internet really encourages generalizations. The BY is a key example . "This guy will never..." "that guy will never..." "we will never" and we end up apologizing for our short sightedness.

Some kids pass up the most money. We have a few. The women have had a bunch.

But I'm not sticking with any theory. We are one congressional intervention away from more change.

The only thing I'll bet on, is in 3 years, everything we think we know now will be wrong.

Top players will only pass up most money when they think there is an opportunity to develop to make more money through their draft status.

I agree. But it's still kids choosing program and coach over immediate money. So it kind of evens out. There are obviously more factors than just highest bidder. Kids have chosen less immediacy for a better program since college ball began, the medium has just been different.

He wouldn’t say that if he was still at Kentucky

UNC specific.

A few years back someone posted an article ranking the best jobs in college basketball and UNC was at the top.

The reason for it was that they were backed by Jordan brand and because of that had resources and could provide exposure that no school could match. This was in the infancy of NIL and predates revenue sharing, but quite a bit of it still applies.

I imagine that there are only a handful of positions that UNC wouldn't be an upgrade on for a men's basketball coach.

"I left a blue blood, am not at a blue blood, and will never be at a blue blood, therefore there are no blue bloods."

Blue bloods at this point are categorized historically more than they are today’s merit. Back then, they’d attract top kids/coaches via prestige. Diff world today.

UK should probably cut bait on Pope sooner rather than later. That fanbase can’t stand him, he’s not getting any HS kids(very weird) and he’s not shown the kind of presence you need as the head of that looney bin. You can kinda tell it’s not working and likely won’t.

They already want Jasper Johnson out of there and Malachi Moreno is just ok. UK doesn’t feel like a school that should be relying entirely on portal kids.

I am fine with that. We were the last one in the door, forever.

Kind of a low key story there…the influence of the sneaker companies is all but gone.

Just a handful of years ago, Nike was a kingmaker.

Now? They do not have that kind of pull. That might have more to do with some “blue bloods” like Kansas and UNC struggling to gain separation the way they once did.
