Nika signs with European team

That’s good news. It’s much closer to Zagreb, both physically and culturally, than where she was playing (briefly) last year. Although Istanbul is a great place from what I’ve read. Sopron is close to Budapest, and I ‘ve known quite a few folks who loved visits there.

I can assure you that Istanbul is a great place.....especially if you have an appreciation for history and/or the Ottoman Empire. There is a lot to like in the food as well.

But the shorter distance to Zagreb is nice.

Didn't Gabby play for Sopron? Hmmmm....

Is she (Nika) rehabbing in Seattle?

For those like myself who are not exactly Euro ball experts: :)

The 2025-26 Euroleague Womens basketball season is scheduled to begin on September 30, 2025 with a double-round week. The season will feature an expanded 20-team format with a longer regular season from 34 to 38 games and conclude with the Final Four on May 24, 2026.

Glad to hear! Istanbul is fantastic with it's East/West split of culture.

Her cards are tough pulls in the UConn Panini NIL set, so it's fun to find one and think of the good times seeing Nika play.

Just refreshing my memory on Nika since her UConn days (No comments needed, thanks. Getting worse every day! ;) )

- The Storm drafted Nika as the 14th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft. with Nika signing a four year rookie contract that runs through 2027.

- She became an immediate Storm fan favorite in her rookie season she saw limited floor time played usually at the end of games in garbage minutes.

- She joined Besiktas J.K. in Turkey's KBSL league after the 2024 WNBA season ended but In October 2024 she tore her ACL

- The Storm put Nika on the suspended list in April 2025 because she wouldn't be able to recover from her torn ACL before the start of the 2025 season.

- In effect, her injury paused her contract and she is eligible to resume her contract with the Storm in 2026 following her playing with Sopron Basket.

- Being under contract means she remains a team asset and according to WNBA rules can be traded. Whether the Storm would proceed to entertain trade talks depends it would seem on just how well Nika fits into the Storm team makeup next season, how well she has recovered from her ACL injury and how she performs while playing in the Euroleague.

Please feel free those with better memories to correct any misstatements - or misremembered ! - statements.

I don't think it's because she wouldn't be ready before the season started. I don't think she was going to be able to play at all or not until the very end of the season.

any idea on how we can see Nika's games?
Euro League games, in the past were viewed, for free on the FIBA Euroleague on You Tube.

I have no idea, at present if they will continue on You Tube or go to a pay stream service.

Not sure on the regular Hungarian League games.

If I see them, closer to the season, I will post.

This isn’t posted so. . .

A little bit from the team indicated they know what they have in Nika:

We are convinced that her style of play, mentality, and attitude perfectly align with the values of our club. She is a true floor general, and with her on the court, we know our team’s game will be in good hands” - said our general manager, Zsófia Fegyverneky.

Nika is destined to play for one of the expansion teams. If she were healthy, she most assuredly would have been drafted by Golden State.

Reading the club statement from Majic Hands’ link, the team says there have been other UConn players on Sopron. BlueSky asked about Gabby. Any other players anyone knows about?

Megan Walker along with Williams. And Kelly Faris in 2013.

From the Sopron history page
2013/2014.
We made few changes in our roster, and signed also with a new coach, Mr. Igor Polenek from Serbia. Our new players were: Kelly Faris
2014/15
We have left the Euroleague after 16 years, and started in Eurocup Women. We signed contracts with three young players from abroad, the Serbian talent, Aleksandra Crvendakic, and two American talents, Bria Hartley and Kayla McBride

2020/2021

Following the season that was cut short by the pandemic we hoped that both the domestic and international campaigns would go all the way, and that we can compete for the shiniest medals again. Even though there was no real chance to get back to normal.

Our financial situation has become worse, too, so in exchange for the four players leaving the team – Candice Dupree, Aleksandra Crvendakic, Debóra Dubei, Virág Weninger – we announced only two newcomers – Gabby Williams and Megan Walker

2021/2022

We faced French side Montpellier, against whom we already had 3x3 Olympic champion Stefanie Dolson on board in place of Aby Gaye, who could not find her place on our team.

I may have missed a player, and the Sophron history page didnt list 23-24 or 24-25 seasons
