Rewatching the SMU game from yesterday, I noticed the following:

With 4:13 to go in the second quarter, Geno pulled Saniya and lectured her. However, the lecturing seemed gentle and instructive, complete with pats on the back.

Saniya scored her 10th point of the game late in the fourth. With 1:56 left, Geno sat her to get Pulido a modicum of PT. As Saniya went to the bench for the afternoon, Geno made a point of giving her a slap on the back again for having had a nice game.

Looks like Geno likes what Saniya does these days. I wasn't as sure earlier in her college career, but those two interactions were really nice to see. I'm very pleased the relatively local girl from Sing Sing has a good rapport with her tough-as-nails coach, and that she's spending the we in half of her college career as a valued member of the Husky rotation.

I noticed the conversation during the telecast and would categorize it as just that, a conversation with some instructions, rather than a lecture - he often has those meetings with PGs during foul shots at either end, but it did seem a little special last night with Chong.

I really likes how much leadership Saniya showed yesterday when she was playing the PG position. She was vocal, letting the players where they have to be, move to, etc.

I couldn't find a picture of Geno with Saniya but did see this one of him in a teaching moment with Gabby.

Saniya is making mature decisions on the court, reading her teammates well while shooting well. She's also been stabilizing for the freshman frequently directing them to the correct spot. But man, she still gets beat too often off the dribble and is still a little slow covering the perimeter shot.

No one gets beat off the dribble more than Kia.

Kia plays 30 + minutes per game- Saniya usually gets beat that much in approx 6-8 minutes per game. The last two years it was as if she wasn't even on the court defensively. She has improved this year. But comparing her defense to Kia is comical. If you were correct- Saniya would have been starting the past two years.

You mean Ossining, right? Sing Sing is the name of the prison.

If Saniya were playing on another team (the right team for her) she might be leading the country in scoring.

She sacrifices that to be on the best team in the country no matter what.

Maybe Gino is currently thinking of incorporating her more in the offense to shoot 3s to bolster their perimeter offense and pressure opponents defense from stacking the inside in anticipation of big games down the road.

She may come out ahead in the long run. Geno has made more of a complete player and not just a scorer.

I'm a huge Saniya fan!
Me too.
I like Saniya one of the reason is she never complains and is very loyal to UConn.
Doesn't like some players asking for transfer ASAP if did not get enough PT.

The ranks of unemployed summertime WBB players is swelled by the number of great college scorers who never make a WNBA team or only last a year or two. The ranks of ex-Uconn WBB players playing in the WNBA each summer is swelled by the good players who sat at the feet of the master to learn their craft even of they never starred on their college teams. :)

Yeah, I can think of a few UConn non-starters/infrequent starters who went on to have several-year careers in the WNBA and overseas. So, being in contention for "Best Husky in a Supporting Role" is, at least for some, a better career move than the leading role "off-Broadway".

Exactly and not just a Stokes phenom, but players like Swanier and Jessica Moore and Ashley Battle who translated high basketball IQ into prolonged WNBA careers when much more highly regarded or at least better scorers in their classes were long gone.
