New UConn Hockey Coach Mentions WBB Fans

I posted the other day that UConn hired former Boston College asst coach Mike Cavanaugh as its new Hockey Head Coach. He was at BC for 18 years and was part of 4 national championships at BC and is a terrific hire as UConn heads in to Hockey East in 2014.

I just watched the video of his introductory press conference. He's really impressive and I'm now officially a UConn Hockey fan. In talking about what attracted him to UConn he talked about the passion of the fans and mentioned the busloads of UConn fans that used to arrive at Conte forum to watch the UConn women play BC. He said he is really looking forward to meeting Geno and wants to observe one of his practices.

I was already a fan, but now...this is a great hire. I just hope he burns all the clothing he owns that says Boston College.

He may keep a hat or T-shirt hidden somewhere. I actually loved how he handled the questions about not turning UConn in to BC-southwest or whatever. Sounds like he has "10 toes in." One of the questions asked by the media is whether he would accept an offer to coach the BC program when current coach and his mentor Jerry York retires. Warde Manuel said that's a decision he (Cavanaugh) would have to make. Like I said, sounds like this guy is ready to embrace UConn and establish his own program.

Now pretty sure we'll be going to some hockey games when they start playing at the XL. Sounds like a good guy! But no one at BC could prepare him for Geno, live and in person. Hope a welcoming glass of wine is involved!
