New Rule For Transfers Proposed

A college coach is much more in control of the program than any pro coach. How long would Boone’s replacement last if he upset Judge?
Actually I think it varies among sports. If a new Yankee skipper wins the World Series people would say “Aaron Who?” If they are losing he’s gone. But actually I think in todays game in baseball the power rests with the gm more so than the manager.

And you might be right about basketball which is a plays league but I’d say that isn’t the case in football at all. There the coach has probably more control in most non-Jet teams. And it is variable in baseball but as I said the general manager is usually the power center.

But again, I don’t know why that would be a reason for a guy to be able to transfer.

I also think players should sign contracts. Both parties should be held to the same rules.
While I appreciate the egalitarian mindset, if the core principle you're working under is that college athletics ought to mimic the real world, then you need to recognize that in the real world there is a distinction between "bosses" and employees, or in this case perhaps "upper management" and employees.

I like this but ONLY if the player can also transfer without sitting if his coach leaves.

That a coach could leave without consequence but his players couldn't was always the thing that enraged me about the "no transfer without sitting" rule.

If this is solely about basketball development, then I agree ... I can be selfish like that as a fanatic, b/c I want 'keep' our players too

How many of those 3-4 year players went on to play in the NBA or other league professionally? ... isn't the average something like 2-3% of all college hoopers ever play pro?

If this about academics and shaping young athletes for non-basketball success (which is often a point, when convenient), then I disagree ... the person that went to 3 schools, arrives in a future deal or interview room w/ 3 different sets of experiences; risk taking, adversities, successes, uncertainties, failures, etc. ... vs. someone that went to just one.

I appreciate how college hoops has changed to finally give athletes the autonomy & piece of the pie they deserve, just like any other student.
I recall it's 1.6% of D-1 college players make the NBA but don't recall their average tenure.

I’m in the super minority here but I actually don’t mind the unlimited transfers…

There are a million horror stories but just look at our program the last few years. Cam Spencer started at the low majors and worked his way into the NBA by outperforming and transferring up each step and finding the perfect fit. Mahaney tried to transfer up, realized it wasn’t a fit, and now he gets the chance to make something out of the rest of his career instead of rotting on the bench. We’re Koroma’s 4th team in 4 years, but he finally gets to experience the top level of college basketball. Even though it didn’t work out for Nahiem Alleyne at St John’s, at least he got the chance to play and show himself more than he would have here

What’s the point of limiting transfers other than punishing players? Feels like people are going after the portal to try to fix problems with NIL and tampering

.-.
I think graduate seniors should exempt for a second transfer. If they are able to graduate, then they have earned the right to move on. This would solve the Cam Spencer hypothetical.

I would also want to see a rule where if a coach leaves, players cannot follow them to the new school. If a coach is fired, that would be a different situation. It's not the coach's decision to leave the players.
