Have to admit Cal (along with Izzo) are on target with their support for a change in the transfer rules:

Proposal: Each player would be allowed to transfer one time without sitting out.

"The transfer portal is way worse than NIL," Izzo said. "What the transfer portal does is gives a lot of middlemen a chance to come in. What I think is bothering me and my sport the most is the way people are tampering with people throughout the year."

"Even in the NFL, NBA, you don't tamper with a guy who has a four-year contract," he said. "The portal never closes because you have too many dirtbags who are tampering with people and players. The worst thing I see is the tampering."

Coaches should only be able to take a new job every 4 years then.
Just stop. Not even roughly comparable. NFL and NBA and major league players can’t just walk if the team brings in a new head coach or GM or manager. Heck you can’t move if the team is sold and you are under contract. If Hank fires Boone on Tuesday, Judge should be able to move to Boston next season under your theory.

One free transfer then sit a year anytime after unless the head coach leaves
Why do you want to allow changes if the coach leaves? These guys are now professionals whatever you want to call them. As I said above, Judge can’t leave the Yankees if Boone goes. The Pats quarterback wasn’t allowed to leave when the coach got fired. The CT Sun players don’t become free agents and in that case the team is being sold to new owners AND being moved to a new city. Maybe it was a legitimate argument when players were actually amateurs. Today, it is phony as a $3 bill. The coach left. Cry me a river. Then just suck it up and play to impress the new guy!

Wouldn’t be opposed to this

I don’t know if the courts would rule against this but how about an x, y, z rule where x is the maximum number of players that can transfer into a given program in one year, y is the maximum number of players that can transfer over a determined period (z).

For example X could be 3 or 4 players max a year. Y can be 10 - 12 players over a period (z) of 4 - 6 years.

Coaches should have to sit out a year after signing on to a new school, so they can focus on the core competencies of their new institution, and develop a greater appreciation of the opportunity given to them

I've gone to the Champions Classic (Kentucky, Michigan State, Kansas, Duke) almost every year since inception - last year watched a kid named Cooper Flagg turn the ball over 3x at the end of the game, in a loss to Kentucky, so the final four was no surprise ... this year I'm sitting it out (the same old teams are getting stale) and let the organizers know they need to change the name of the event to "The Classic" until they invite UConn, but I digress, lol

It's really sad to watch Cal and Izzo lose their grip on the total control they once thrived on - the same control that built their legacies (and fortunes) on the backs of these young men.

... there's always talk about rolling things back to the "good old days" ... let's roll back the whole thing - freshman cannot play (that might solve that 1-and-done thing), and let's cut coaches pay so they have to moonlight teaching badminton at the ymca to make ends meet

The problem is that there's no collective bargaining, revenue sharing, etc. in college basketball. I think you'll see some of these measures adopted by the heavy hitters to prevent transferring from one power school to another, but otherwise the wealth disparity is just too great for something like this to be realistic. I hate it but mid-majors are now feeder programs for the big boys and I don't see that changing.

I have been saying this since the transfer rule changed. These kids should absolutely be allowed to transfer 1x without having to sit. However, once you do transfer, you either have to stay for 2 years or sit out one.
The tampering stuff unfortunately is not going away until the NCAA cracks down it. Even if the NCAA changed the rule to Cal/Izzo’s proposal, tampering will continue with players who are eligible to transfer without having to sit.

A college coach is much more in control of the program than any pro coach. How long would Boone’s replacement last if he upset Judge?

This is limiting a player's ability to transfer as they wish which comes off as punative to the Ed O'Bannon legion.

If there is tampering, fix the tampering.

Izzo is basically saying If a player transfers to Michigan State that player has to stay and Izzo does not want to worry about him transferring out, but heck, Izzo can drop him from the team if he likes.

Or once could just say we would have Mahaney still.

I’m in the super minority here but I actually don’t mind the unlimited transfers…

There are a million horror stories but just look at our program the last few years. Cam Spencer started at the low majors and worked his way into the NBA by outperforming and transferring up each step and finding the perfect fit. Mahaney tried to transfer up, realized it wasn’t a fit, and now he gets the chance to make something out of the rest of his career instead of rotting on the bench. We’re Koroma’s 4th team in 4 years, but he finally gets to experience the top level of college basketball. Even though it didn’t work out for Nahiem Alleyne at St John’s, at least he got the chance to play and show himself more than he would have here

What’s the point of limiting transfers other than punishing players? Feels like people are going after the portal to try to fix problems with NIL and tampering

It might be difficult to legally say to player X that "You can't change to the school of your choice unless..." Freedom of choice.

If they have trouble instituting such a rule on the player side, perhaps start making the schools follow some rules. Example, limit incoming transfers to 2 per year per school or X number of transfers in a 3 year period or something. Or, perhaps allow players to transfer to a school but each transfer counts as a scholarship of a minimum of 2 years even if the player leaves after one. Get creative.

There's something to allowing adult and leaders be able to have enough control to lead in the way they should.

Coaches are there to help young men develop and become better players and people. That is the suppose to be purpose of college sports.

If you take that control out of the hands of the people who are suppose to be responsible for it we lose that part of it. No one is developing properly playing for 3 different coaches in 4 years. Think about all the players it took 3-4 years to learn Calhoun’s style and become their peak selves.

Great coaches aren't these big bad guys we have to protect players from. They are there to help make them better and should be given the tools to help them do so.
